You can thank Washington, DC's local holiday "Washington Emancipation Day" for getting an extra time to file your income taxes this year. Instead of the 15th (which falls on a Sunday) you'll get two extra days to file this year.
"Procrastinating taxpayers have two extra days to file their federal returns this year.
The tax deadline is usually April 15, which this year falls on a Sunday. A local Washington, D.C., holiday Monday marking the date that President Abraham Lincoln freed slaves in 1862 pushes the final filing day to Tuesday, April 17.
The new tax plan passed at the end of 2017 will not be in effect this year, because payers will be filing 2017 taxes, not 2018.
Tax day was even later due to similar circumstances last year.
The 15th was on a Saturday and Washington’s Emancipation Day was celebrated on Monday the 17th."
