    Unhappy Columbine High School Massacre

Today's the 19th Anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre. What a terrible day. Where were you that day when you heard? I was sitting in a restaurant west of Youngstown. I had just gotten out of Court and my co-counsel wanted to stop for lunch. We stopped at a chain restaurant (don't recall the name) and it was on television. We couldn't believe what we were seeing. What a tragedy.

I don't recall where I was or what I was doing when I heard the news. It really was a watershed moment in American crime, I guess you could say. There have been kids (and parents and school employees) shooting one another on school grounds since Colonial times, but it was nearly always a situation where you had just one or a few victims. Less than a year before Columbine, a 15-year-old in Oregon killed his parents at home, then went to school and killed two students and wounded 23 others; but for anything like the number killed at Columbine you have to go back to Charles Whitman at the University of Texas in 1966 (17 killed, 31 wounded). Hard to blame the media, I guess, for obsessing about it to the extent that they did, but I have to believe that many if not most of the subsequent massacres were in part motivated by a desire to "be famous".

Was the kid in Arkansas the second one? There was one shortly after Columbine, if I recall correctly, and I remember thinking copycat.

I totally agree that it was a watershed moment.

"Watershed"? In what respect, that ever since, it drawn all the wannabes out of the woodwork for their cheap 15 minutes of fame?

I couldn't tell you the names of any of them, that's how famous they made themselves. The Democratic party, however, might feel differently about that.
