I suspect there is no quick fix and it probably needs to be thought out extensively by the advisers/mods/admins with input from the forum members.
At this point, the only thing that will make the forum attractive is robust and diverse viewpoints. Clearly, there is no possibility for civility, so the best we can hope for is diversity.

Bans should be of a determinate period instead of lifetime IMO. A 3 or 6 month ban would allow for what the OP is suggesting. If the Ban rule can be modified it might work. Maybe I'm a sadist but I liked seeing the brawls play out on the board. We thought that was bringing down the forum when in reality it was propping-up traffic and membership. I have no numbers to back-up my assertion just my gut and experience here since the bans happened.

I suspect there is no quick fix and it probably needs to be thought out extensively by the advisers/mods/admins with input from the forum members.

I said back in the "beginning of the end" that when the crack down on "trolling" started that it would end up like this. You can basically thank Chris and his incessant partisan $#@!ry for this.
“Conscientiously believing that the proper condition of the negro is slavery, or a complete subjection to the white man, and entertaining the belief that the day is not distant when the old Union will be restored with slavery nationally declared to be the proper condition of all of African descent, and in view of the future harmony and progress of all the States of America, I have been induced to issue this address, so that there may be no misunderstanding in the future”

As of now that might be true however I suspect some, not all, left for that very reason. Some want to come in and have a decent, robust and diverse viewpoints but in a civil manner. It's something that should be considered if its decided to rebuild the forum. There is no quick fix for this and I think some serious thought will have to be given as to what direction the forum will be heading in.

I don't want to try and blame anyone, but I will accept responsibility for the role I played in it. You were right, I was wrong. Let's fix it.

I disagree that those banned posters were interested in civil discussions. They were decidedly uncivil. But banning them has not made this place any more civil, so what's the point in keeping them away? As far as I'm concerned, generalized civility is simply impossible, so the best we can hope for is to have diversity. People will still be rude and disrespectful, but at least there will be some semblance of balance.

@jimmyz I think you left out the quotes:

    This is what I said:

"I think there is probably more to it then that. We probably could probably suggest general amnesty, but have to ask ourselves is there a way to prevent any further erosion of the members and how do we attract new members? What does the forum offer that makes it attractive to others and makes them want to join?"
This I'm assuming is what you said:

"Bans should be of a determinate period instead of lifetime IMO. A 3 or 6 month ban would allow for what the OP is suggesting. If the Ban rule can be modified it might work. Maybe I'm a sadist but I liked seeing the brawls play out on the board. We thought that was bringing down the forum when in reality it was propping-up traffic and membership. I have no numbers to back-up my assertion just my gut and experience here since the bans happened."

    This is what I said:

"I suspect there is no quick fix and it probably needs to be thought out extensively by the advisers/mods/admins with input from the forum members."

Just to set the record straight.

No, I didn't mean the banned ones, I meant others who weren't banned but left due to frustration.

Oh, well I'm talking about the posters who were banned. Just let them come back. Banning them has not made the forum better. It was a mistake.

Okay, gotcha. As a suggestion, you might make your pitch to the Admin/mods in here and see what response you get back.
