Shooters claimed they feared for their lives. School shut down for several weeks, a relatively small settlement was paid.
I was in the last few weeks in high school, figured I’d get drafted but never was, due to high lottery number.
College campuses, as I recall, were in great turmoil over war, civil rights, sexual freedom, etc.

If the shooters were actually trained and equipt for crowd control instead of military assault rifles, it would not have happened.

Lack of training and any kind of equipt. You cant take a jumble of civilians with not much military training and hand them an m-14 and stick them in front of a large group of people yelling and acting out. They DO NOT know what to do. So when the kids started charging at them and throwing some rocks, they started firing because thats all they had. Should not ever have happened

They didnt even have tear gas, why not bring in water canons, they had nothing. Someone just ordered a national guard platoon Armed to the campus.

I was living in Cleveland when this happened. The NG was the wrong force to send in. When attacked they only thought of shooting back. I won't blame them; it's what they were trained (perhaps poorly) to do.

The State Highway Patrol would never have reacted this way. They would have knocked some heads and gassed them and no one would have died.

Jim Rhodes screwed up. He had just settled the violence from the teamsters and it colored his view of Kent State.

Lesson learned... Don't throw rocks at guys with guns.
