In this microessay I would like to focus on some economic aspects of an Ideal Society. Every citizen would have a right to
-- Food of reasonable quality.
-- Housing of reasonable quality, like a one room apartment or a room in a dorm.
-- Medical care of reasonable quality.
-- Perhaps spending money for personal expenses.
Availability of food, housing, and medical care would greatly decrease the crime rate. First, no one would have to commit crime like robbery, theft, or drug dealing in order to sustain themselves. Second, the stress of unemployment would be greatly decreased. In many cases, stress is a precursor either to crime or substance abuse. Third, everyone who has any mental problem would be given psychological and psychiatric help of reasonable quality.
Provision of food, housing and medical care would also make it much easier for young and not-so-young people to gain independence. According to census.gov, 34% of young people ages 18 -- 34 live with their parents. That is 8% higher then in 2005. Two million of these young people neither go to school nor work.
The Ideal Society would also make sure that people with violent or depressive tendencies would not be given access to extremely dangerous items like guns and strong narcotics. In USA 1999-2015, there have been 198,760 gun homicides and 313,600 gun suicides. Many people in USA are very strong supporters of the Second Amendment, but how is it possible to keep guns away from those who misuse them?
In 2016, 64,000 Americans died from drug overdose including 35,0000 Americans who died from opioids. At least 20,000 people in USA 2016 died from prescription drugs. These numbers show that the state of Health Care in USA is very poor -- in particular to those who can not afford it. An Ideal Society with free medical care to every one in need would have much lower rate of drug abuse and fatalities.
It has been pointed out that providing the aforementioned level of care to everyone may be extremely expensive -- possibly $30,000 per year per recipient. Even though USA has all the necessary resources, the public may be unwilling to do so, since it would mean a significant increase of taxes for the very rich. It is likely that the Ideal Society will not be attained in USA for the next 50 years, and in many parts of the World it may take even longer.
At this point, Universal Welfare has been obtained only in Scandinavia and several oil-exporting Nations. As Solar Power is going to become the major source of energy, Sahara Nations may gain enormous wealth -- greater then nations of Arabian Peninsula. They may gain resources to build Welfare State without high taxes. Hopefully the technological progress and subsequent economic growth will make it possible to build a state based on Universal Welfare -- even if such possibility is still in distant future for most of the World.
