While I don't think that it's the responsibility of Amazon to deal with the city's problems, this is an issue for many cities. So many jobs are vanishing and leaving people without work. Those with an education and skills have a place in today's society, increasingly those who don't are ending up on the streets and it's only going to get worse as technology keeps eliminating jobs.

Technology also creates jobs; but you note a major problem- the uneducated.

This is probably unconstitutional. It may cost the State of Washington business, if it's not. We have to find a way to deal with the education issue -- and I mean education where you can actually make a living, not one that just makes you feel good. Also, watch This Old House 2018 season -- the United States is desperate for trades people. Desperate. Good wages.

What happened to the 'trade schools' 'vocational schools' ?? Where I grew up the "Alabama School of Trades" was engulfed by the local Jr. College. I've spent my life in the trades, I've noticed over the years the buildings are structurally sound, even more so as construction tech advances, but the finish work is horrible. ............. Maybe Seattle should spend their money on vocational education.
It's ok if you disagree with me. I can't force you to be right.

But you have to get your hands dirty. Can't have that.

I believe you are confused. Socialists, those on your team, eliminate jobs.
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

The Washington State Supreme Court will not overrule this tax. The only time they overturn a law is when the people vote in favor of a tax limiting mesure or decrease.

It will cause Seattle to lose business as it is viewed as hostile to the job creators

It will be interesting to see if this is constitutional, though it may be. Early on, there was a proposal to only tax larger businesses, which to me is unconstitutional. This appears to hit all businesses. It may be suicide but it may be constitutional.

    Correction: I saw this on www.Foxnews.com :
The Seattle City Council on Monday passed a plan to tax businesses making at least $20 million in gross revenues about $275 per full-time worker each year. That “head tax” is estimated to raise about $48 million -- which authorities are marking for housing and homeless services.
I again question the constitutionality of taxing a large business specifically b/c it has a certain revenue level.

Lettuce and strawberries still need picking. Unfortunately, the people you advocate for are moslty human detritus and useless in any way for the benefit of society nor themselves.

But the measure has sparked intense debate — even shouting matches in otherwise reserved Seattle — over who should pay to solve the housing crisis exacerbated by that growth.
The City Council is proposing a tax on employee hours to raise about $75 million a year for affordable housing and homelessness services. Nearly 600 large employers making at least $20 million in gross revenues would pay about $500 a year per worker.

Amazon, the city’s largest employer, would take the biggest hit.
Supporters insist the online retailer and others that have benefited from Seattle’s prosperity and contributed to growing income inequality and skyrocketing rents can and should pay.

Councilwoman Kshama Sawant, a socialist, said affordable housing is critically important and the council should “stand up to Amazon and Jeff Bezos’ bullying.” Construction workers chanted “no head tax” and disrupted a news conference she held last week on Amazon’s campus.

A smart , but slippery move , on the city's part at least as far as Amazon is concerned. The taxes Amazon pays will really be paid by customers in some way shape or form . Therefore in part , the country helps out with the downside of the boom. But it's a copy cat world so who's next Detroit ?
How about having you know planned ahead and had some tax or funding stream, rent controls, etc. in place building as the boom grew? If you have a city where large numbers of people need government assistance with housing, even employed people, than the city's economy has not boomed. It has failed. The boom has not reached far enough down to be called a boom.
