Spanish is actually the official language in Spain, and some other countries. English is the language of the poor, too. Look at how many people are poor here in America.

Fluency in English does not preclude speaking another language with others who speak that language. The world is full of multilingual people. My father spoke six languages.

Xenophiles aren't any more rational than their xenophobe counterparts. Two sides of the same crazy coin. They both believe that there is an inversely proportional relationship between national identity and acceptance of 'the other'. The hostility of so called xenophobes is a consequence of not knowing who we are as a nation anymore. Of course the man in the OP is a loon but I understand his complaint to a degree. For example, the Walmart near my office looks and sounds like the UN General Assembly. What country am I in? Xenophiles, OTOH, imagine that national identity is the problem and seek to undermine it in a mindless embrace of 'the other'. Talk about throwing gasoline on a fire. Both attitudes are wrong and dangerous.

That's nice. People who don't speak English tend to be poor. I suspect that's true in most of Canada as well.

We're talking about the US. Yes, I know they speak Spanish in Spain...

Fluency in English is important for economic success in the US. Is this really something you don't believe?

No, I do agree with you about english, it's the language of business. If a nation doesn't have english-fluent business speakers it would be difficult to do business internationally, and that would probably be an economically poor country. That makes sense. What doesn't make sense is calling countries who's official language is spanish "poor". Plenty of people in those countries speak english also. If a country is poor, it's more likely they have been dominated by big corporations and turned into worker-ants, carving up their own resources under the careful watch of some "authority" the companies have put in power.

Who cares what languages people are speaking? It's not like you have a right to understand what they are saying and if you did, you would probably be rolling your eyes as much as you do when you can understand what people are saying. The fact is that homegrown Americans are not contributing enough offspring, so America need taxpayers who will have children. Like it or not, Euros have even fewer kids than Americans, so a decreasing population means decreasing revenues and decreasing infrastructure, not to mention unfunded pension plans. Those brown people that you are less fond of actually have larger families and fulfill the future need for taxpayers.

I get the irritation over illegal immigration, but what I don't understand is cutting off your nose to spite your face because the first generation of any (legal) immigrants are 'different', even though you know that by the 2nd and 3rd generations, immigrants become as American as apple pie.
