WASHINGTON — In a veiled rebuke of President Trump, former Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson warned on Wednesday that American democracy was threatened by a growing “crisis of ethics and integrity.”

“If our leaders seek to conceal the truth, or we as people become accepting of alternative realities that are no longer grounded in facts, then we as American citizens are on a pathway to relinquishing our freedom,” he said in a commencement address at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va.

Even small falsehoods and exaggerations are problematic, Mr. Tillerson said.

He did not mention Mr. Trump by name, although the president is prone to both.

“When we as people, a free people, go wobbly on the truth even on what may seem the most trivial matters, we go wobbly on America,” he said.

Bravo for Rex, it is great seeing a bit of truth about the worst president in our history.

"I found much that was alarming about being a citizen during the tenures of Richard Nixon and George W. Bush. But, whatever I may have seen as their limitations of character or intellect, neither was anything like as humanly impoverished as Trump is: ignorant of government, of history, of science, of philosophy, of art, incapable of expressing or recognizing subtlety or nuance, destitute of all decency, and wielding a vocabulary of seventy-seven words that is better called Jerkish than English.” Philip Roth

sour grapes, obama was the threat to democracy, bypassing congress on everything and using his DOJ as an attack dog for anyone he disliked

I agree with Rex but I disagree with the NYT and @exotix that Rex was referencing Trump. He may have been, but in reading the article (which I did) I think he was referencing everybody in DC. They are all prone to lying. Hence, I agree with him.

Ridiculous. Obama used the IRS and the DOJ as Gestapo and KGB. When the smoke clears and the books are written and we all see how bad it was, remember that you read it here first that I said that the Obama Administration was one of the most corrupt, if not the most corrupt, in the history of this country.

And still nothing has come of that.

While tRump wails and gnashes his teeth that he can't use the justice department to punish his political enemies.

    1. We know that the Holder / Lynch / Comey DOJ ran interference for the IRS and HRC mess. Read the NYT's article today on the Trump Campaign investigation & the NR one I posted yesterday. Ignore the NYT's spin, and just sit down and think about the facts in the article. Maybe write them down on a piece of paper and look at them. Really look at them and think about them. Again, ignore the spin. If those facts don't concern you about to what lengths one party will go to I don't know what will.
    2. Trump hasn't tried to 'punish his political enemies' by using the DOJ.
    3. Yes, he has complained that he can't get Sessions to use the DOJ to get these people to stop investigating for non-criminal activity (or something like that, I truly forget)
    4. He does want to use the DOJ to punish criminals like leakers -- which I think you previously told me you agreed should be done.
