Forces that protect nuclear weapons loses explosives on North Dakota road

That is a big oops. I imagine someone will FOIA the final investigation when it is done.

The Air Force is offering $5,000 for leads on the whereabouts of a box of explosive grenade rounds that its personnel accidentally dropped on a road in North Dakota while traveling between two intercontinental ballistic missile sites — the facilities scattered across the U.S. heartland that stand ready to launch nuclear warheads at a moment’s notice.

Airmen from the 91st Missile Wing Security Forces team were traveling on gravel roads May 1 in North Dakota when the back hatch of their vehicle opened and a container filled with the explosive ammunition fell out, according to a statement from Minot Air Force Base.

On May 11, the Air Force sent more than 100 airmen to walk the entire six-mile route where the grenades were probably lost, according to a statement from the local Mountrail County sheriff. But two weeks after it was lost, the box of explosives still hasn’t been found.

The missing ordnance is a belt of linked grenades for the MK 19 automatic grenade launcher, Sheriff Kenneth G. Halvorson said in the statement shared with The Washington Post. “This ammunition is specific to that launcher and will not operate in any other launching device without catastrophic failure,” he said.

The security forces of the 91st Missile Wing are responsible for protecting the intercontinental ballistic missile silos that Minot Air Force Base operates across the Great Plains.
If it was an army unit, the soldiers would not stop the search until the ordinance was recovered.

At one of our border camps two men jumped over the fence (8-foot fence), ran to a ready vehicle and stole an M60 and an M2. They tossed the M60 over the fence where a car was waiting to speed it away. They were unable to toss the M2 over the fence. They tried. Once the alarm sounded they left the M2 and jumped over the fence.

We did not recover the M60.

LOL they didn't do their homework. An M2 has to weigh 70 pounds at least.

As a follow-up, we think we figured out how they did it. We had a high rise that overlooked the camp. About 8 stories up there was one particular balcony that attracted undue attention. No matter the weather an attractive woman would step out onto the balcony, disrobe completely, lean over the railing briefly then sunbathe for ten minutes. She would then get up, lean over the railing briefly, put her robe back on and go back inside.

Between the time she leaned over the railing the first time and the second time the two men jumped over the fence. Because it was her habit every man had his eyes on her balcony for that critical few minutes. About three days after we made this observation in a report she disappeared. Every man in the camp was sorely disappointed.
