I guess that is why Hungary and other Eastern EU nations think they can tell the EU to go to hell when told to accept hundreds of thousands of Middle Eastern and North African migrants.
No, there aren't. This is part and parcel of the diseased thinking that led to two world wars. The nation state is obsolete. It has no future.

Hungary and Poland are telling the bullies in Brussels to shove their economic threats up their asses. You just cited a story proving my point.
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

The nation-state will remain until their is some common threat than none can solve on their own. And their are vast differences. Northern Europe resents having to prop up Southern Europe whom they believe to be lazy and irresponsible. Eastern Europe is dead set on EU reforms that will return sovereignty to member states.

The threats are clearly economic. But I was referring to the EU demands. Those are not economic, at least with the migrant issue- they are cultural.

That day arrived a long time ago, Peter. Nation states are increasingly incapable of exercising their sovereignty in a globalized world. It's a model of state that had its time. It has no future. Yes, IOW eastern Europe insists on a more federalized structure where member states are not bullied by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels.

But the leverage the bullies in Brussels have is economic, Peter. That's because the E.U. is first and foremost an economic union.

The EU has move beyond a mere economic union. But you are correct in that economic factors are the sticks and carrots that they use to try to keep member states in line. To survive the EU will have to either become a true political union, or return to a strictly only free trade zone. Those are radically different constructs.
