Trees that glow in the dark?

By merging a light producing compound with plants, a team of Dutch engineers envisions illuminating city streets with trees that glow at night.

Cool, but what's the cost in dollars and energy to create these trees?

This is the kind of innovation that would make electric cars viable, in my opinion.

For bioluminescent trees? Once created they will grow like any other tree.
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

Why your streetlights won't be replaced by glowing trees any time soon.

Neither the biochemistry nor the energetics seem to work out.

"There's just one small problem: as planed the plants won't glow. At least not without a fertilizer that costs $200 a gram. Even if the team were to overcome this hitch, trees would probably never generate enough light to do away with a street lamp."

    They are more like nightlights.

Then compare that cost to the cost for the electricity and infrastructure to light city streets.

Interesting point. I wasn't sure if you could mess with DNA that much and not produce sterile trees.
