Mexico and European Union retaliate against Trump’s metal tariffs, promising new taxes

This is going to cause the markets to go down in the short term. Trade wars are not good for anyone, except to be used to get what you want in trade negotiations. And I only favor tariffs to counter dumping, which is illegal.

President Trump Thursday imposed tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from the European Union, Canada and Mexico, triggering immediate retaliation from U.S. allies against American businesses and farmers.

The tariffs — 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum — will take effect at midnight Thursday, marking a major escalation of the trade war between the U.S. and its top trading partners.

In response, the E.U. said it would impose duties “on a number of imports from the United States,” referring to a 10-page list of targets for retaliation it published in March, which included Kentucky bourbon and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. European leaders also vowed to proceed with a complaint to the World Trade Organization.

“This is protectionism, pure and simple,” said Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission.

The Mexican government said it would levy import taxes on U.S. exports of pork bellies, blueberries, apples, grapes, certain cheeses, and various types of steel.

President Trump had announced the tariffs in March, but gave several U.S. allies temporary exemptions while they negotiated potential limits on shipments to the United States.

We need to put pressure on Mexico. They think its OK for them to "dump" people on us and then they flip us the bird.

How do tariffs on metal address that issue? The people mining and producing the metal aren't the ones sneaking into the US.

What goes around comes around. The steel and aluminum industry are celebrating, but a whole lot of other US businesses are going to suffer from retaliatory tariffs. Those retaliatory tariffs will be levied on goods where they will do maximum damage. When all manner of small to mid-sized businesses start complaining that this trade war is making them insolvent, perhaps saner heads will prevail.

/Edit watch for rising automotive prices, since both the direct manufacturing and parts industry depends on less expensive steel and aluminum to keep prices down.

Pressure on the Mexican government. They cam end the border crossing anytime they choose.

The flat steel is used in auto production. Hard to make a car without it. Car production is their main job source.

Canada had retaliated against the new steel and aluminum tariffs.

I really hope this doesn't turn into a trade war. In the end it will only hurts consumers and jobs on both sides of the border.

It is a negotiating ploy. The China tariffs have gone done as they open up more of their market.

See, Trump knows how to do this as much as Obama didn't.

Europe, Canada and Mexico will not be that easy to shake down. The US doesn't export that much to China and the really important things that it imports from China are goods generally coming from American national companies operating in China. Those goods have not been impacted by tariffs.

What the media is failing to see is that Trump does not "really" want to impose tariffs. This is how he negotiates. He does not ask for something if he wants it. He takes away what you have and then makes a deal with you to give it back. It is a simple tactic really. I am not worried about Jobs and tariffs. Trump is a business man, do you really think he would try to purposefully make people loose their jobs when he is trying to create jobs and get re-elected. We need to just sift the facts from the news and read between the lines. We need to not fall for the in-between words that the media spits out. Most of the words the media spits out are childish and condescending remarks that remove all their credibility.

I think Trump needs to pretend his bluff if real and make it real, when he gets what he wants he will remove the tariffs plain and simple. That is how I see it. I seen this link on my news page https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/31/polit...rts/index.html Looks like they don't know their own boy too well. Even they believe it. He uses this tactic every time and it does seem to work. It has almost 90% chance to work every time. It is childish and not moral, but it's how he does it though. But there could be the one time that it does not work. But I think other nations don't want their economy to suffer either so they will take this down to the wire like a game of chicken.
