Trudeau declines to meet Trump because of US precondition

TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday he offered to go to Washington this week to complete talks on renegotiating the North American Free Trade agreement but that Vice President Mike Pence called and told him a meeting with the U.S. president would only happen if Trudeau agreed to put a five-year sunset clause into the deal.
Trudeau said he refused to go because of the “totally unacceptable” precondition. He made the comment while outlining Canada’s response to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

Late Thursday, President Donald Trump responded in a statement released by the White House, “Earlier today, this message was conveyed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada: The United State (sic) will agree to a fair deal, or there will be no deal at all.”

Trudeau made the right call. Unrealistic conditions shouldn't be accepted as a price to simply meet.

    What is unrealistic about that?

Putting a sunset clause doesn't mean it will go away after 5 years. It can be renewed if all the parties want, but this way everyone gets what amounts to a 5 year trial period to find out what is good about and what is bad about it. At the end of the 5 years, you either make adjustments and continue or walk away, but nobody is locked into it if they decide it isn't a fair deal.

    I don't see a problem with it.

WHAT is unrealistic about the sunset clause? Would you rather have all the parties locked into the treaty in perpetuity?
