However, you are right in that one who believes in God, can not be an atheist. They may be an agnostic or even a deist, but certainly not an atheist.

Agnostics . I guess I'm one of those. But according to some organized religion is the only path to a higher being.

There's only one path to salvation and that path is not restricted to one single faith. It is restricted to those who have accepted Christ. Period.
