She probably loved the cat more than she loved him. Consider the kind of person who would beat a cat. That cat may have been the only source of affection that she had in her life. Not that it justifies murder, but psychologically that cat may have been far more than just a cat to her. Abusive spouses often attack pets to hurt their mate especially if they feel their spouse has more affection for the pet. Love is not rational. People grieve the deaths of beloved pets as much as they grieve the death of people. For those out there with pets that you dearly love, if someone was beating it and you happened to have a gun, what would you do, particularly if you couldn't physically take on your pet's assailant? Would you just let it be killed?

Assuming he was beating the cat for no reason, he's not getting any sympathy from me.
Not justifying, but explaining how it can happen. Had she been a man, perhaps there would have been a physical fight, but lacking the ability to stop him any other way, a gun is a great equalizer. Did she want him to die or just stop killing her cat? I can tell you one thing, if some guy was beating one of my dogs and over the course of my life I've had several dogs, I wouldn't be having rational philosophical discussions in my head about human life vs dog life. I'm a female, so I'd use whatever was at my disposal to prevent the death of my dog. My motivation wouldn't be killing my dog's assailant but stopping him. Was that the situation in this case? I don't know, but it's possible.

If she killed him in the act of beating the cat, I don't have a big problem with it.
