Sheriff defends using state's prison food money to buy beach house

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/alabama...t-beach-house/

GADSDEN, Ala. -- An Alabama sheriff legally used more than $750,000 of funds meant to feed inmates to purchase a beach house. Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin told The Birmingham News he follows a state law passed before World War II that allows sheriffs to keep "excess" inmate-feeding funds for themselves.Entrekin reported on state ethics forms that he made "more than $250,000" each of the past three years through the funds. The sheriff's annual salary is more than $93,000. He and his wife purchased a four-bedroom house with an in-ground pool and canal access in September for $740,000.Entrekin got a $592,000 mortgage. The home is one of several properties with a total assessed value of more than $1.7 million that the couple own together or separately. In a statement to NPR, Entrekin said the "liberal media has began attacking me for following the letter of the law."
I just love that. "The liberal media has began attacking me for following the letter of the law." I don't understand why whenever somebody gets caught doing something shady, they attack liberals and the MSM. Are we just the scapegoat for everything? I wonder, whatever happened to personal accountability?

I read about this about 4 or 5 months ago. They need to cover this loophole that allows this. But he or she is right the liberal media wouldn't go after their own for the same thing.

If its proven he did that he deserves jail time, I cant imagine theres a law that allows a sheriff to keep taxpayer funds for themselves.

The sheriff is right. He is unethical but within what the law allows.
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

So, I read more into this. Apparently, the law goes like this...the sheriff IS allowed to keep the money, but is also responsible for covering fund shortages if the fixed allotment doesn't cover food costs from one year to the next.

This creates a whole bunch of questions, though.

Since the sheriff is in charge of their nutrition AND is allowed to integrate prisoners' nutrition funds into his personal finances, doesn't that create a conflict of interest? What is to stop the sheriff from doing exactly what he has done in this story? He fed the inmates two corn dogs per day, and pocketed the rest of the money. What kind of regulation is there to stop this from happening?

What do you mean "their own?" You mean, there aren't any liberal sheriffs?

The solution is a better law.

There has to be something they can charge him with. And not just him, this happened in 2009 and nobody changed the law? Heads need to roll.

And this is why we love our liberal mainstream media. It exposes corrupt unethical people, even if they are technically following the law. Laws are made for a reason, and it is obvious that this particular law was not very carefully crafted.
