This is just common sense, you get treated the same way you present yourself. If youre a defendent and you present yourself as a bum you will get treated like a bum. You present yourself like a thug, the same result.

If you show the court the respect to come decently attired and act and speak respectfully you have a greater chance of a more favorable outcome than not.

What a ludicrous thing to say. Plenty of stupid laws on the books, and plenty of innocent people get prosecuted and even convicted when there is next to nothing there. And even those found innocent get taken to the cleaners without any compensation.

What does any of that have to do with the alleged crime at hand and a suitable punishment? Isn't justice supposed to be based on the crime at hand and the circumstances around it and not sucking up to the court and kissing the judges ass? What the hell does any of that even have to do with justice? Complete and utter rubbish.

I wear a suit and tie to court. If it is a surprise visit I keep a sports jacket (navy blue) and several ties in my office.

You can't even get past security in the court of federal claims without a coat and tie.

Do you have any factual studies to suggest that:

    1. Half of criminal defendants are falsely charged.
    2. Any significant percentage of criminal defendants are innocent.
    3. Criminal defendants are more or less being extorted.
    4. There's "plenty of stupid laws on the books"
    5. Plenty of innocent people get prosecuted and even convicted when there is next to nothing there.
    6. More than 5% of people are falsely charged.

Yes, we are in a pay-your-own attorney system; except that we aren't. The people generally pay through the court-referral system and the public defender system. I can't speak to your experiences, but my experiences lead me to conclude that it is an tiny percentage of people in our legal system that don't try to do the right thing.

Of course. People should be able to take a dump in the middle of the courtroom if the mood hits them. After all what does that have to do with the issues at hand in the courtroom?

Xl you need to calm down and go read the title of the thread and the content. I was strictly refering to courtroom dress decorum what this thread was about
