I've wondered the same thing but with Betsey DeVos and our doofus president, America has given up on education and now turns to Fox and right wing media for world history, opinion, and all that has happened since with the exclusion of science and anything some silly Americans think happened longer than six thousand years ago. But that said I have posted an excellent OP from Irritus U that covers education for America's special people. See links:

"In 2013, the Nation’s Report Card showed that only 38% of high school seniors were proficient in reading. With scores like that, the U.S. isn’t likely to earn the “most literate country” award any time soon."

"And what is the origin of the statistic that claims 32 million adults in the U.S. are functionally illiterate? It’s based on the National Assessment of Adult Literacy—conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics in 2003—in which a demographically representative population of 19,000 adults were interviewed. According to the findings of the survey, 14% (1 in 7) of adults fell into the category of “Below Basic” in “Prose Literacy,” meaning that they possess “no more than the most simple and concrete literacy skills.” Those who fall into this category are deemed “functionally illiterate.”"
