New text messages between FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, both of whom worked on special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Trump's relationship with Russia during the 2016 election, will be publicly released Thursday as part of the Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General report.
The two agents were outed last year for having an extramarital affair and sending messages to each other that criticized President Trump despite their being part of a federal probe into his 2016 presidential campaign and transition team's possible collusion with Russia.
The texts were not revealed in a preview letter to members of Congress, but potentially thousands of new messages that were given to Inspector General Michael Horowitz could be aired later in the day, CNN reported.
Horowitz said the Strzok-Page scandal hurt the agency because it gave the impression that federal agents were biased, but insisted it did not affect Mueller's investigation into Trump and Russia.
"Although our officials should continue to thoroughly investigate whether their political biases were manifested beyond snarky text messages, I think the American people can rest assured that the robust system of checks and balances within the FBI ensures personal political beliefs do not impact investigations," Horowitz wrote.
“We did not find documentary or testimonial evidence that improper considerations, including political bias, directly affected the specific investigative actions we reviewed,” he added. “The conduct by these employees cast a cloud over the entire FBI investigation.”
Strzok was removed from the Mueller probe last year and Page left her post last month.
The inspector general also concluded former FBI Director James Comey "deviated" from official procedures in how he handled the agency's investigation into Hillary Clinton and consequentially hurt the organization's reputation.
