Angry The Mafia Is More Powerful Than It’s Ever Been

Not that I turn to "Slate" for my news, but this popped up on my page today. I wonder if it's because I'm half Italian. My Grandfather always rejected the notion that "The Mafia" even exists as fictional babble from police authorities looking to besmirch the good name and reputation of my heritage.

My father and grandfather called the Mafia a myth also, I never believed it because there were mob guys all over my neighborhood, a couple of doors down across the street was a mob social club.

When I finally went to school for Police Administration, I had to take a sociology course, the professor covered the mafia and said it did not exist. I took him on and he had no facts or proof to substantiate that there was no mafia and I believed I presented far more facts to dispute what he said. A much younger italian student discussed it with him also.

Anyway criminal organizations exist and they come in all ethnicities and races.

What effect would legalizing drugs and prostitution have on their revenue? See if we REALLY wanted to defund our gangs in America that's what we'd do. Call them mafia, MS13, etc they are organized to make money via illegal activities. Which makes them organized crime .

Not nearly as much as you imagine.

Organized crime is diversified. Street gangs aren't. Did the repeal of Prohibition destroy the mob? Hint: no.

Lessening revenue and destroying are two different things. But either one is good while making deep cuts in the street gangs as well. Those two legalizations would cut into human trafficing

I knew a guy in the FBI who spent over a year undercover in a mob family.

The UN estimates that between 20% and 33% of organized crime's revenues come from illicit drug sales. It's also worth noting that there is often significant overlap between their drug sales and other sources of revenue: For example, prostitutes often double as drug-dealers for their clients. And much of organized crime's contract killing and security is tied up in the drug trade. Given that, I think it's safe to assume that legalizing drugs would have a hugely negative effect on their operations. And while it's true that prohibition didn't destroy the mob, it all but eliminated its involvement in the manufacture and distribution of alcohol which, I think we can agree, was a very good thing for society.
Power always thinks it has a great soul, and vast views, beyond the comprehension of the weak. And that it is doing God service when it is violating all His laws.
    --John Adams

Well, that's Italy. Those are blood feuds and syndicate fights. I've seen such articles as well, and it's a damn shame that the American mob was so reduced: they kept the money in this country, the kept the riff-raff under control, and now that they've been weakened, we have MS13 and cartels running our black markets; oh boy!
