    That depends.

If they're the average Joe, then they're probably punished.

But if they're one of the elites - politicians, bankers, etc. - then they're given a pass or even rewarded.

Republicans seem more worried about punishing poor migrants than they are about rooting out the corruption and criminality at the highest levels of government.

Well, it sort of is about the law. The policy is a direct extension of it.

And while I have been taking Republicans to task for their completely amoral stance on this issue, it's worth noting that Democrats are wallowing in their own form of hypocrisy.

I mean, Democrats are always lecturing me on the importance of government authority and its laws, like they're sacrosanct or something, yet these same Democrats seem perfectly willing to let millions of foreign nationals violate federal laws with near impunity. Many Democrats even seem willing to reward their lawbreaking by giving them amnesty.

So, as usual, we have two sides of the same hypocritical, partisan coin arguing based, not on a consistent set of principles, but on their feelings at any given moment.

Republicans feel threatened by immigrants, so they support this, whereas Democrats feel immigrants can be used to bolster their voting base, so they are against it. Neither side is governed by reason, that's for sure.

Well, that's an easy question to answer. The US government has never been concerned with "humanity". Indeed, most of what it does is extremely damaging to humanity. The only reason why this truth manages to elude so many Americans is because they've bought into the myth of the US government's propriety and necessity. In reality, the US government was created by bankers, of bankers, and for bankers. Of course, that's simplifying things a bit, but powerful financial interests were undoubtedly the driving force behind the creation of the US government. And do you think humanity was among their concerns at the time? Do you think the oligarchs who created and control the US government care about some impoverished migrants and their children? Rhetorical question, obviously.

I am here to point out hypocrisy and bullcrap. And based on my cursory reading of this thread, there is an ample supply of it.

We are compassionate that's why we don't put children in jail with their parents. We then reunite them. Then we send em back to their country giving them the ride home rather than making them trek back thru Mexico.

Right. I am sure you believe it.
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

It appears, once again, you side with those who break the law and stand against the American citizens.

I believe the real problem came about when the US government assumed control over immigration policy. Whereas for most of our early history an individual's immigration status was decided largely on the State and local levels, i.e., democratically, the latter 19th century and early twentieth century saw an increasing centralization of immigration policy with the US government, which resulted in all sorts of shenanigans that brought about the current situation.
