The founders wanted three branches. They didn't want a parliament with Prime Minister in any state. They wanted the Executive and Legislative branch to be separate.
Ballot approval don't change that. For one thing, if the legislature ignore a ballot vote what happens? The courts can't force the legislature to do anything. When the legislature does pass any of the issues the Executive can veto it.
If the amendments are automatic it is the state's choice. It doesn't change the form of government of Texas.

Do you understand that the State's sovereignty is derived from the citizens of the State? Changing the Constitution demands a vote of the whole people. It sets the limits on the State government. Making necessary and useful laws, on the other hand, is routinely done by representatives.
In my opinion, before a citizen should be allowed to vote on a Constitutional amendment they should have to show a deep understanding of the reasons for the change and the reasons opposed.

I think form of government is important here. Direct democracy and republic differ in form, but both are types of democracy.
