I won't explore the obvious gun comparison too much....just a tool, don't punish the responsible users etc...
Anyways, I agree that drivers should be fined for using handheld devices while driving and additional criminal charges laid if it causes an accident.
What needs to change is what changed with drinking and driving, the cultural shift that made it morally reprehensible.
Most new cars have hands free and can even send and receive texts hands free. Obviously motorcycles don't.
It should be banned, but even if it is, there are many who are so arrogant and stupid that they don't understand the meaning of focusing on the road. Part of it is a fundamental change in people's priorities. These people need autonomous vehicles - they lack the common sense to drive.

You are correct Peter - lots of studies find talking on the phone while driving - Bluetooth included - very distracting. Why would it be so difficult to pull over and have the conversation if it is important. My dad does that if he has to make a phone call for his work, but he has the car phone divert to an answering service while he is driving.
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-36475180Drivers using a hands-free phone get just as distracted as those holding it in their hand, researchers have found.
Scientists at the University of Sussex found conversations can cause the driver to visually imagine what they are talking about.
This uses a part of the brain normally used to watch the road, the University of Sussex study said.
Other studies have suggested that phone conversations in a car are more off-putting than listening to the radio or talking to a passenger, Dr Hole added.
https://www.motoring.com.au/bluetoot...search-105112/According to new research released by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), hands-free phone conversations are just as dangerous as hand-held phone calls...
However, the new research shows that even with both hands on the steering wheel, having a phone conversation via Bluetooth hands-free is distracting, adding one second to reaction times.
According to the QUT research, the real-world consequences of this distraction are that it takes an extra 11 metres to come to a complete stop from 40km/h as a result of hands-free conversation. And for provisional or P-plate drivers that distance is even longer.
http://evidencebasedliving.human.cornell.edu/2013/06/17/the-evidence-on-hands-free-cell-phone-devices-while-driving/Now a growing body of evidence suggests using hands-free phone devices such as ear pieces and Bluetooth is equally as dangerous as talking on a cell phone normally.
In addition, a 2012 white paper by the National Safety Council – which includes references from more than 30 research studies – found that “the cognitive distraction from paying attention to conversation – from listening and responding to a disembodied voice – contributes to numerous driving impairments” including inattention blindness (when drivers look at, but do not “see” objects in their path), slower reaction times and problems staying in a lane. That paper concludes: “Driving while talking on cell phones – handheld and hands-free – increases risk of injury and property damage crashes fourfold.”
Oh, I wish I were a glow worm,
for a glow worm's never glum,
'cause how can you be grumpy
when the sun shines out your bum!
As long as we are banning things let's ban drugs, guns, and marriage. All are distracting.

The problem with taking calls while driving is that the other party is not also aware of road conditions. When two people in a vehicle are talking, assuming both are in the front seat, both can see traffic conditions. At that, if two people get into an argument while on the road, it leads to driver distraction. One such couple (a man and his pregnant wife) almost pushed my husband, who was sitting at a red light into a bunch of children crossing the road. Hubby managed to avoid hitting any kids and was ready to beat the other driver to a pulp until he saw the very pregnant wife in the passenger seat. The third party driver was apologizing profusely, and admitting that they were arguing as they approached the light but that stupidity could have caused the death of a bunch of little kids going to school. IMO some people should not be allowed to drive.

Same I have bluetooth but I dont care what anyone says, when youre talking and thinking of what you are going to say and listening and laughing and yelling etc you are not paying full attention to the road.
Unnecessary Phone use should not be a priority over others lives and cost everyone more in insurance so you can giggle and flirt and make private and business calls. PULL OVER
They have to ban ALL use of cell phones in moving vehicles. PULL OVER like youre going to use a phonebooth
