In Indiana, you need a permit to carry a pistol to a range. It had to be "immediately unusable" while in transport. I haven't bought over-the-counter in so long, but a number of years ago, you could carry a pistol out of a purchase as long as you had a CCW. It was enough then to know that you had already undergone a background check because you had a CCW. Long guns have never been an issue. Cash and carry. Ammo, too.
WalMart is the only place where they ask you what you're using the ammo for: Long guns or pistol. Sometimes they don't even ask, having a knowledgeable person behind the till. They tend to know their ammo. Gun shops not so much for asking. That being said, I live in an area where guns are common and there's a lot of hunters. Hell, they even trap down here. Unusual for Indiana.
Don't get caught transporting a pistol to the range without a permit. That's illegal possession.

How is one to know if an assailant has the ultimate goal in mind at the time of said attack? Intent of the assailant? Guess and guess wrong could cost you your life.

That's something you'd have to convince the jury in a trial I suppose.

In New York you can carry concealed as long as you have a permit.

I don't know what state you are in, but I know in NY if you pull your weapon, shoot, injure or kill someone, you'd better be able to prove that your life was in danger, otherwise you'll be charged accordingly.

This is unconstitutionally backward. The State mut prove guilt. The defendant has no obligation to prove innocense.

Being threatened, punched in the face, spit on or similar level of assault is most likely not to be considered justifiable grounds to shoot someone.

The State must prove guilt. meanwhile, vote in better representatives to legislatively change the idiotic law.
