The US? All we need are LNG terminals on the Western Coast of Europe.

How about the cost of the gas? The Germans, like most of Europe have been experiencing colder winters. They use gas almost exclusively for heating. Shipping gas from America would definitely add to the cost. That would not be well received by the German people - actually any of the people of the EU since they are all using a great deal of Russian gas. It doesn't help that so many apartment buildings in Germany are poorly insulated. In order to compensate for the additional cost of the gas, many (too many) buildings would have to undergo costly renovations no doubt particularly in the former East Germany. That would take a long time to accomplish. In the interim, either the people would dump the government that brought them higher heating costs or the government would have to subsidize the cost of gas.

Gazprom is still in a competitive position and can afford to lower prices. LNG is not going to take the EU market by storm any time soon.

Shipping gas by freighter has its own perils. The North Atlantic is an unpleasant place in winter. Many storms and weather patterns are getting worse. Iran has the largest natural gas reserves in the middle east and they are much closer than the US. They are presently under sanctions and unable to sell to Europe. At any rate, Germany is buying some gas from the US among other sources and it is stored in 43 underground storage facilities, with a total capacity of about 20 billion cubic metres - reserves for about 3 months if Russia cut off the supply. There are also many other gas storage facilities around Europe, some government some private. Germany only sources about 36% of its gas needs from Russia. The rest comes from Norway, the Netherlands and local sources.


The problem with LNG is that it costs almost twice as much as the Russian gas. Germany does want to reduce its dependence on Russian gas, but it will be very difficult.

It is not about where they get their gas. It is about us paying a fortune to protect them from the people from whom they are buying their gas.

It will be cold if the Russians turn their gas off in the winter. Or perhaps Germany will just go along with what Russia wishes to avoid that.

I am not anti-American, but realistic about Trump's unfortunate effect on other nations. Furthermore, I don't affect what actually happens. The surest way to put people off is to try to bully them into compliance.

Every president for the last four decades has tried to nicely coax the Euros into fulfilling their financial obligations to NATO. It hasn't worked. Why would you believe continuing to do what is not working, will finally work?
