TRUMP BREAKS NATO: Leaders Pledge 'Unwavering Commitment' To Boost Defense Spending

Cnn will most likely report Obama did this and Trump is taking credit or some such swill.

But President Trump once again does what no other Potus even tried to do, save americans a TON OF Taxpayer cash.. Read the last bolded paragraph and tell me thats not disgusting. Germany should pay every cent that we do.

Leaders of member nations that belong to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) pledged their "unwavering commitment" to increasing their defense funding of the organization after President Donald Trump slammed the group for treating the United States unfairly.

The commitment from European leaders came after Trump publicly embarrassed NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg during a meeting early on Wednesday morning. Fox News reports:

The U.S. and European allies signed a declaration stating they are "committed to improving the balance of sharing the costs and responsibilities of alliance membership."

The declaration comes after confrontational and testy discussions between Trump and other NATO leaders.
"So, we're protecting Germany, we're protecting France, we're protecting all of these countries," Trump said. "And then numerous of the countries go out and make a pipeline deal with Russia where they're paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russia. So, we are supposed to protect you against Russia."

"You tell me if that is appropriate." Trump continued. "This has been going on for decades. This has been brought up by other presidents, but other presidents never did anything about it."

"It's very unfair to our country, it's very unfair to our taxpayers," Trump told Stoltenberg. "And I think that these countries have to step it up not over a 10 year period— they have to step it up immediately."

A Tuesday report from Forbes revealed that the U.S. spends more than double in defense spending for NATO than all other NATO members spend combined.

The United States' defense spending is more than double what every other NATO member spends on defense – combined.

Like the Climate Change issue (Paris Accord), the world thinks we are their personal piggy bank.

Simple solution, Move US Troops from countries not meeting the goal. Our Troops help the economies of those countries. Base our people only in countries that meet the goals, build new SOFA's where the host countries pay for the costs of stationing of our forces, the cost of stationing troops in your country should be no more to the US than stationing them CONUS.

I don't know much about NATO, but I read a number of Europeans saying President Trump is totally mistaken, and doesn't understand NATO funding.

I saw this on another board where I sometimes lurk, and it might help explain things.

With respect, I fear you may be confusing two different aspects of NATO funding. Member countries contribute in line with an agreed cost-sharing formula, based on Gross National Income. (GNI equals GDP plus income obtained in dividends, interest etc. from other countries.) Under that formula, the U.S. contributes 22.144 percent of the NATO budget, followed by Germany (14.65 percent), France (10.63 percent) and Britain (9.84 percent). The national contributions go towards NATO’s military costs, civilian costs and the NATO Security Investment Program (NSIP), which deals with investment in command and control systems etc.

What appears to be confusing many people, including your President (who really ought to know better), is this occurrence (and bear in mind the 2% is a guideline proposal - not a binding contract or agreement).

At the NATO summit four years ago, the allies declared their commitment to “reverse the trend of declining defense budgets, to make the most effective use of our funds and to further a more balanced sharing of costs and responsibilities.” To that end, the heads of state and government gathered in Wales that summer recommitted themselves to increasing defense spending in real terms and achieving the NATO guideline to spend a minimum of 2 percent of each member’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defense by 2024.

Scaled to the scope of their interests and grand strategies, our NATO allies are generally committing about the same proportion of GDP to the defense of Europe as the United States.

He understands the issue. Most European nations have not been fulfilling their obligations. Period.

    Really? It Is? To Who?
Trump is not the first US President to bemoan NATO spending

NATO head says alliance is "more united"

Poland: Trump's tough talk on NATO good for eastern flank

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday showed she was siding with Present Trump at the NATO summit in Brussels, saying her country was paying its fair share for the defense alliance.

“We lead by example, not only by meeting the NATO targets of spending 2 percent of our GDP on defense,” Mrs. May said, adding that the U.K. also deploys thousands of troops to NATO missions around the world.

So again, who thinks this is good for Putin?

Europe thinks allowing us space for bases is the equivalent of something. We have basses theer to protect them. We don't need their help at all.
