Multiple Injured in School Bus Crash in Colorado

Multiple people have been injured after a school bus crashed in Weld County, Colorado.
The severity of the injuries is not known at this time, nor the ages of those involved. The bus reportedly collided with the truck, causing it to flip onto its side. The exact number of injuries is unknown.

The vast majority of schools across the nation are "gun free zones" which make the children sitting ducks. Only six states require seat belts on large school buses, which most buses are. Even the states that require them don't require them on all school buses. I figure its because its expensive to retrofit and its cheaper to just lose a few kids once in a while. Colorado is one of the states that don't require them and Colorado has had a lot of school bus accidents with injuries and deaths. This latest one was in Weld County where one of the worst accidents ever happened in 1961 when a school bus was hit by a high speed train killing 20 kids. It took that to get national legislation passed that required school buses to come to a complete stop and open the entry/exit door when it comes to railroad crossings. Here we are in 2018 and the kids are still unprotected. Oh well, when kids get killed I guess we can just make some more to replace the dead ones.

This is a very serious issue and unfortunately there is no easy answer, your points are well thought out and clearly you have the best interest in mind. With that do you know one of the biggest reasons why school buses do not have seat belts? Believe it or not it is for safety, let me explain.
School buses do not have seat belts added mainly because in an accident if it became necessary to evacuate the bus quickly small children that could not or struggled to unbuckle their seat belts would be trapped. If that happens you have one adult, the driver who if uninjured can assist the up to 70 kids on the bus. They conducted a lot of tests and research, have redesigned the seats multiple times to hold the kids in the seat area as best as possible. In the event of a crash, the seats absorb most of the impact, protecting the children who sit in them That is why the seat backs are so tall on a school bus now days. It is not be perfect answer but in general it works. There are nearly 500,000 School buses that transport around 26 million students each day. On average 10 people riding a school bus die each year which is only 8% of the 134 who die in school bus accidents each year. The National Safety Council concluded that school buses are 40 times safer than the average family car, making them the safest of all forms of ground transportation.
