    My dog bit someone today

    And I thought I was a good dog-owner.

I've owned large breed dogs for almost 2 decades. I've understood and respected their limitations and haven't put them or others in harms way. But, today I underestimated one of them and the FedEx delivery kid got bit. He's being exceptionally cool about it, but I still feel like I need to do something.

Would sending a gift card to this particular driver be in bad taste? Or would something else be better?

You could offer to pay his lawyer bills.

Call your insurance carrier and report the claim. Let them deal with it.

They might require him to put the dog down in order to pay the claim.

Which dog? Oh, my. That sucks. I know the feeling. In my case, though I really thought the person that got bit deserved it and I promised not to do it again. No gift card from me.

Legally speaking, you shouldn't send him anything in case he changes his mind and decides to press the issue. A card would be tantamount to an admission of guilt. If he's willing to let it go, then I would just leave it at that.

Just automatically assume he's in trouble with the law? I suppose he could be, working for FedEx, and all.

What about Worker's Comp? Doesn't that apply here?

I was wondering about that. My thoughts were to send it to him under a guise of appreciation for him from a customer. Still though, I could see the 'admission' view. Although, in reality, it is/was my fault.

Here's the good thing. I'm in northern Idaho where old-school thinking is still prevalent. Not a lot of sue-happy mentalities up here.
