San Francisco continues to spend big in fight against homelessness

It’s a problem that’s costing the city of San Francisco hundreds of millions of dollars annually to try to solve – and for its new mayor, something that's starting to become increasingly smelly too. London Breed says the amount of feces scattered on the streets of the wealthy city in recent months is among the worst she has ever seen, and San Francisco reportedly is set to spend nearly $280 million in its next budget fighting homelessness – an average of $37,300 for each of the city’s estimated 7,499 homeless residents.

That is a pile of money that is doing nothing really, the problem is as bad or worse than it has been.

Remember the good old days when law enforcement could transport homeless people out of their jurisdiction?

Why not put them in the dormitories at Berkley? It's not like the place is actually educating anyone.

Alcatraz. It's sitting out there, all by itself, empty, plenty of space, maybe it's time to put it to use.

The homeless can make it their own country, doing as they please, $#@!ting wherever they want.

The only way SF is going to be able to clean up the streets is, if they rid themselves of the homeless, they don't really care about them anyway.

Alcatraz may be in disrepair, but, look where those people are living now, it would be a step up.

If they transplant the homeless, they'd only make more room for the illegals..........

You're right, of course and, SF officials love their illegals, above all else, including their own homeless LEGAL citizens.

Okay so illegals are necessary to do the jobs U.S. citizens will not do. Apparently no U.S. Citizen wants to clean up after the homeless so why not let the illegals dispose of the feces. Give each illegal a broom and tell them to start sweeping up the city, if they refuse put them on a bus and drive them to the border. Either the number of illegals in San Francisco will decrease or it will be one of the cleanest cities in the United States.

An interesting phenomenon is how those who are homeless manage to cross the country (and cross Canada) to get to cities on the west coast that are more likely to provide for them and have welfare programs for them. In Canada, Calgary and Vancouver were the best spots for the homeless, so they migrate out in that direction when they can. Part of it is also weather-related - warmer cities with more moderate climates are less likely to kill you if you don't have a place indoors to live. New York City in the winter can kill you, for example, whereas winter and summer in a place like San Fransisco are generally not warm or cold enough to kill you. I am not sure how they get there, but they do flock to cities with programs in preferable climates.

Calgary in Canada, for example, has the best programs for the homeless compared to other major cities (which helps mitigate the cold winters) so they end up getting a lot of homeless people from Ontario.

But essentially, more programs should help get people off the streets permanently, and not just offer temporary comforts like a bed and food. Those things are necessary, but it would be helpful if they provided free PO boxes to put on work applications as an address, or if they had a program to temporarily offer first and last month's rent (which most homeless people can't afford). Giving access to computers would be necessary for applying to jobs now since most applications are online (and not just attaching a resume, but filling out a detailed questionnaire). So forth. All of those things are extremely expensive, though, but most services offered do nothing to actually change the trajectory of most homeless people.
