look at all the active seaports all along the Atlantic. Realize also that the south would have control of the Mississippi as well. They would have formed their own country, and charged their own tariffs, being they weren't part of the North.
Also at that time, the country was powered by duties, import and export paid for DC's operating expenses. Income tax was non-existent. If they lost that income, the North would not have run, economically, the same way. It would have lost 2/3 or better of its income.

13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution: Abolition of Slavery
Passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865, the 13th amendment abolished slavery in the United States and provides that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.".
