The Emancipation Proclamation
President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."
Despite this expansive wording, the Emancipation Proclamation was limited in many ways. It applied only to states that had seceded from the United States, leaving slavery untouched in the loyal border states. It also expressly exempted parts of the Confederacy (the Southern secessionist states) that had already come under Northern control. Most important, the freedom it promised depended upon Union (United States) military victory.
Although the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in the nation, it captured the hearts and imagination of millions of Americans and fundamentally transformed the character of the war. After January 1, 1863, every advance of federal troops expanded the domain of freedom. Moreover, the Proclamation announced the acceptance of black men into the Union Army and Navy, enabling the liberated to become liberators. By the end of the war, almost 200,000 black soldiers and sailors had fought for the Union and freedom.

Nonsense. As a separate nation no one would have had much reason to deal with them. They didn't have anything except cotton. England found out that the American South wasn't needed for that. The South would have gone broke. It's money had no value to start with.
The population and the money was in the North. They would have picked up the trade that didn't have to go through the South.
The South couldn't even feed itself. they had little ability to make machinery.

He isn't going to read this. He isn't going to admit he was wrong.
This only covered slaves in areas controlled by the rebels as of Jan1, 1863. Yes, a lot of slaves ran to the Union lines but most couldn't. That's why Lincoln worked the Congress to pass the 13th Amendment before the war ended.
He didn't believe he had the right to free any slaves except as a war measure. He thought that SCOTUS would rule it unConstitutional. In peace time it was.

The Confederacy was not a nation except in some minds. They were states in rebellion. He had whatever authority he needed to put down a rebellion. some of it was only valid for the duration of the rebellion such as the Writ of Habeas Corpus.
You will never hear me say the Confederacy or Confederate about a rebellion of slavers. They suckered their own poor into fighting a war that benefited only the slavers. Well, it was supposed to.
The federal government should have hanged every member of the rebel government for treason.
