    Orca mom mourns calf’s death

    Orca mom mourns calf’s death

Apparently it is common behavior for Orcas and dolphins. Sad.

An endangered orca whale died shortly after its birth on Tuesday, and the calf's mother has been tending to the body for three days.

The calf was born near near Victoria, British Columbia, located about 75 miles northwest of Seattle. Researchers working to track Southern Resident killer whales responded to the scene, the Center for Whale Research said in a release.

The organization observed the baby's corpse sinking and the mother repeatedly bringing it back to the surface on Tuesday. The mother supported her offspring's body on her forehead as she pushed it toward an island, the organization said.

On Thursday, the mother – labeled J35 – entered her third day of mourning with her calf, Ken Balcomb, founder and principal investigator of the Center for Whale Research, told USA TODAY.

"It's still happening," he said Thursday evening. He said that he has observed the behavior before, but not for this length of time.

The organization says killer whales and dolphins show strong mother-offspring bonds and sometimes transport dead calves for up to a week.

Southern Resident killer whales are a clan of 76 orcas in imminent danger of extinction, the organization says.

It's extremely sad. Yet there are many people, many who even make policy, that believe only humans are capable of emotions. Most likely the reason this calf died was because of environmental impacts by humans.

I was with you, right up to that last part. You blame everything that's wrong in the world, on humans.

To be fair, we $#@! a whole lot of $#@! up. We even treat fellow humans as disposable commodities. She's not wrong to blame us, honestly. Is what it is.

    Update:

Grieving mother orca falling behind family as she carries dead calf for a seventh day

Not good. The mother orca may not make it as well.

A grieving mother orca is falling behind her group as she labors through the water at about 6 knots, continuing to carry her dead calf in a seventh day of mourning.

J35, or Tahlequah, gave birth the morning of July 24 to the calf, which lived for only one half-hour. She has refused to let go of it ever since, carrying the infant either by one fin, or pushing it through the water on her head.

J pod, the mother’s clan, has been staying with her and has turned out in force, with more members of the pod by the day staying with her.

Researchers who work with the critically endangered orcas are concerned for the mother’s health — and ache for her.

“I am so terrified for her well-being,” said Deborah Giles, research scientist for University of Washington Center for Conservation Biology and research director for nonprofit Wild Orca. “She is a 20-year-old breeding-age female and we need her.”
