The Verdict (1982)

Paul Newman is a washed-up, alco*holic lawyer who gets handed a medical-malpractice case and sees it as one last chance to get his career right. James Mason is diabolical as his courtroom opponent who cavorts with the judge, played by Milo O’Shea. Charlotte Rampling is the love interest—whose interests may not be those of Newman’s character. Tight and tense direction by Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon).
Trivia: Nominated for five Oscars in the year that Gandhi won.

Newman deserved the Oscar. His character's desperation is palpable. He can barely breathe at times as his case is stolen from him, again and again, and the audience is with him.

Agree with every word. Newman's one of the greatest performances ever committed to film. Totally robbed of the Oscar. This film is a masterpiece from beginning to the haunting sound of that phone ringing and ringing and ringing at the end.

I agree with your every word. He gave many great performances, but this was the cherry on the cake of his career. I watched it over the weekend, just because. It still moved me.
