Lieutenant becomes first woman to lead Marine infantry platoon

Lieutenant becomes first woman to lead Marine infantry platoon

I think only two women have passed the Marine Corps Infantry Officer course. This woman is one of them.

First Lt. Marina A. Hierl has reportedly made history by becoming the first woman in the Marine Corps to lead an infantry platoon.

The 24-year-old is one of four platoon commanders in Echo Company, a group of 175 Marines and Navy sailors who were recently sent to northern Australia, The New York Times reported Thursday.

Hierl is one of two women to the 13-week Marines Corps’ Infantry Officer Course, according to the Times.

“I wanted to do something important with my life,” she told the newspaper. “I wanted to be part of a group of people that would be willing to die for each other.”

She is now leading a platoon of roughly 35 men for six months of training exercises in the Pacific, the Times reported.

Capt. Neal T. Jones, commanding officer of Echo Company, reportedly asked for Hierl to be assigned to his unit.

    1) Take care of your troops and they take care of you.

    2) Subordinates first, leadership comes last.

    3) Do your job to the best of your ability as a leader.

    4) Accomplish the mission. Whatever that mission may be --- accomplish it. Some people cannot clean a house adequately, Housing contractors such as roofers , yard cleaners, plumbers get sued all the time because they failed at their job. They half
ass done everything. As an American service person, if its cleaning the barracks, policing the lawn around the barracks, a road march, or an actual real world mission, the mission is accomplished.

She is a fresh Officer. New. The leadership training she received should be fresh in her mind.

We will see how good she is when her scheduled promotions go before the promotion board.

For those of you who like to read , if Military or civilian, there are still points in the book can be used for life everyday by everyone :

It will be interesting to follow her career. I don't know the promotion "schedule" in the Marines.

What is the policy on sending women into front line combat now?

Didn't realize that was currently happening.

The Marines have been pretty hard on not changing standards. I don't have any info to say that they did in these instances.

Yes, women have been on the front lines in the war on terror. That war is very different from a war with a near-pear. I.e. real combat.

Put on 160 lbs of kit and move to contact through rough terrain. Then fight for a couple of hours. Totally different animal.

In Iraq and Afghanistan we roll into a village in vehicles. Dismount with minimal added weight and talk to civilians, root out no-good-nicks and shoot them. Very different from major combat operations.
