ATHENS — Prime Minister George A. Papandreou faces a deeply uncertain confidence vote on Friday, a day after calling off a referendum on Greece’s new debt deal with the euro zone. The decision to abandon the referendum eased a major rupture in relations with Europe and, after a tumultuous day of political gamesmanship, won for the prime minister a measure of support from his opposition.

The decision on Thursday to abandon a proposed popular vote on the European debt deal did not end the political turmoil here; Mr. Papandreou still faces a rebellion in his own Socialist Party and the fury of some opposition figures, and the confidence vote later on Friday is seen here as a difficult challenge. But talk of a possible unity government eased international fears of immediate new elections and a looming default if he did not survive in office, cheering markets in Europe and abroad.

Things have gotten so bad with this joker that Western markers are responding positively to the turmoil. I guess like we have ABBO they feel like ABGP ? :D Much like Libya, I guess we'll see if the devil we don't know is better than the one we did.

It looks like his own party is trying to create another coalition without him. It might not be bad for him to step down. That way some other PM's name will have the * next to it in history.

* Was PM when Greece was booted from the Eurozone and the EU!

I've come around to the idea that a European confederation of some kind is a good thing. The political fragmentation of the past is not suitable to the problems the continent faces. The current E.U., however is a monstrosity and I'd like to see it and it's neo-liberal and ethnocidal bureaucrats go.

:D Yes, at this point he has to take comfort in the small victories, no matter how small they are.
