Volkswagen on Wednesday “powered up” the largest single solar installation at an automotive manufacturing facility in the United States and the biggest solar installation in the state of Tennessee. At a dedication ceremony there, dignitaries flipped a giant light switch to signal the official opening of the “Volkswagen Chattanooga Solar Park”, built on Volkswagen’s compound in Chattanooga.

The solar installation at Volkswagen Chattanooga confirms the awarding of the highly-coveted LEED Platinum certification to VW by the U.S Green Building Council in late 2011. At that time, the Building Council called the Chattanooga manufacturing facility “the world’s greenest auto plant” and noted it was the first automotive manufacturing plant in the world to receive the top LEED certification. On Wednesday, the Chattanooga plant remains the only auto plant worldwide to earn the LEED Platinum certification.

The Volkswagen Chattanooga Solar Park occupies 33 acres, or half of the 66-acre land parcel adjacent to VW’s state-of-the-art manufacturing plant. The solar park contains 33,600 solar modules from JA Solar designed to produce 13.1 gigawatt hours of electricity per year -- equivalent to the energy consumed annually by around 1,200 homes in the area.

The electricity produced from the solar park is expected to meet 12.5% of the energy needs of Volkswagen’s Chattanooga manufacturing plant during full production and 100% during non-production periods. The plant covers 1.9 million square feet and employs more than 3,000 people who manufacture the highly-acclaimed Volkswagen Passat sedan. For Volkswagen, the solar park in Chattanooga will rank as the automaker’s largest photovoltaic installation worldwide.

Shame there's no cost analysts in the link.

Be nice to know how much it cost, how long a return

and who/what financed the park.

I would be very surprised if Volkswagen of North America would go so far as to build and operate at a loss ... without knowing.

I would be equally surprised if Tennessee would waist that much land likewise.

Volkswagen Corporation of North America built the solar panel array because they can afford to build one. The average American citizen does not have the ability to construct such devices and arrays so presenting this information is useless. This is one of the main reasons why I object to Ilios's Green Economy rhetoric, only the wealthy will be able to actively participate in it by purchasing the needed infrastructure. We average people will be once again left in the cold with increased fuel costs and the like.
Question: If the new plant only provides 12.5% of the power needed for the plant, where does Volkswagen get the remaining 87.5% that is needed for 100% energy capacity?

Total cost of money invested into the facility

Volkswagen has invested about $1 billion in the facility, creating more than 5000 jobs in the region to date.

Yeah that's the whole plant, I'm only interested in the solar park.

I'm sure the solar park will pay for itself eventually, but how long ??

10 years 50, 100, it makes a difference Cigar.

And who payed to have it built ??

Volkswagen 100% ?? if not how much was underwritten and by whom ??

Volkswagen Beetle to end next year...
Volkswagen Beetle to end next year
Sat, Sep 15, 2018 - Volkswagen on Thursday announced that it would end production of its iconic Beetle cars next year after adding a pair of final editions of the insect-inspired vehicles.

The curvy-topped sedans, which shook off Nazi origins to become a global auto phenomenon, are being sidelined as Volkswagen emphasizes electric cars and larger family-oriented vehicles, but company officials, still trying to completely turn the page after 2015’s costly “dieselgate” scandal, opened the door to reviving the model at some point, alluding to the company’s decision last year to unveil a revamped Volkswagen Bus as a possible template. “As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the US and ramp up our electrification strategy … there are no immediate plans to replace it, but I would also say never say never,” Volkswagen Group of America chief executive Hinrich Woebcken said in a statement. “The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle’s many devoted fans.”

Volkswagen Beetles are parked during the annual gathering of the Beetle Club in Yakum, Israel, on April 21 last year.

Volkswagen plans to offer the two final edition in both coupe and convertible styles. The cars are to include nods to earlier versions and be priced at US$23,045 and up, the company said. The vehicle’s history goes back to the Nazi era, having first been developed by Ferdinand Porsche with support from Adolf Hitler, who in 1937 formed state-run Volkswagenwerk, or “The People’s Car Company.” After the war, the Allied nations eventually made Volkswagen a priority in an effort to revive the German auto industry. The sedans made their US debut in the 1950s, but sales were weak, in part owing to the company’s Nazi origins.

Advertising agency Doyle Dane Bernback in 1959 rechristened the car the Beetle and began touting the vehicle’s small size as an advantage to consumers, according to the History Channel. The car attained further popularity with the 1968 Disney movie The Love Bug, the story of a racing Volkswagen with a mind of its own. Andy Warhol did prints featuring the car and a Beetle was also the most prominent car in the background of Abbey Road, the final Beatles album to be recorded. US sales ceased in 1979, but the vehicle continued to be produced in Mexico and Brazil. Volkswagen revived the “New Beetle” in the US 1997, but sales of the Beetle slipped 3.2 percent to 15,667 last year.

33 acres for 12.5% of utitlities for one plant? Awesome.
