Arabs and Jews Protest, Blockade Together Against Environmental Hazard

by Hassan Shaalan / Ynet

Hundreds of Jewish and Arab residents of Shaar Efraim, Qalansawe (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4312911,00.html) and Nitzanei Oz protested against an environmentalhazard (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4325661,00.html) at the Qalansawe industrial zone on Sunday. Two demonstrators were arrested following clashes between the protesters and police officers.
The residents protested against the existence of a waste disposal site and plans to build polluting factories in the area.
During the demonstration, the protesters blocked Route 444 and waved signs which read “My house is not a dump site.” Among the protesters were school students from Shaar Efraim.
The residents claim that the State has turned their region into “Israel (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3284752,00.html)‘s backyard and one of the most polluted areas in the country.” They hope to dissuade other entrepreneurs from setting up a cement factory that will increase pollution in the area.
They are claiming that in light of the region’s windy climate, the factory would put the health of the residents at risk.
The residents further demanded that the Environmental Protection Ministry withhold the factory’s permit until it meets the legal guidelines, halt construction demolish the structure and remove the illegal yard waste site.

That IS cool....any tiny bit of cooperation between the two factions, especially on such an important issue, is a huge leap in the right direction. I will follow this story; thanks for posting it.

Let me for the sake of discussion take up an opposition view and say what about the cost in jobs and economy in general should the factory not be built?

You have to consider though the feelings of the people who will be most affected by it. The jobs don't exist yet so it isn't affecting anybody at the moment for it to not be built, but if they build it then the community around it will be hurt by pollution and bad air which could cause people to leave and hurt the local economy. In this case the community is more important than the factory in my opinion.

Probably. It was probably a little selfish on my part to not put the website so that the the article wouldnt be judged, or even myself for that matter, but I didn't know that it could be bad for this site. Earth first doesn't have the best reputation but the articles on their site can be good

You said you would from now on. Thing is, people should argue with the message, not the messenger anyway.

I'd suggest the community depends on the creation of new jobs as old one are lost--what Schumpeter called creative-destruction.

A balance between helping and harming the community needs to found. These are difficult problems.

No problem, I found it.

I understand your concern, but some websites get really upset over what they may see as a copyright violation. The general rule is to paste a small amount of the article then provide the link. But other websites prefer you to paste the entire article and provide the link.

Ok thank you! It won't happen again.
