Not sure if there's been a thread done on this subject yet, but just felt like posting some of my favorites. Feel free to jump in with any of your favorite titles for whatever systems. As for me, I'll start off with Nintendo systems.

In keeping with my fetish for lists, below I'll list my five favorite video games for each of Nintendo's home consoles excluding the Wii U. I'm excluding the Wii U because I only have six games for it as yet and so think that listing any top five would be rather premature at this early stage in the system's life span. I'm also excluding Nintendo's portable systems from this list because I don't use my portables as much as I do the home consoles. Finally, let me say that this is by no means to be necessarily thought of as a list of BEST games for each system in terms of their production values, nor is it a list of the top-sellers for each system by any means (as will become particularly obvious by the time one gets to the latter systems). This is simply a list of personal favorites as determined by the comparative amount of play time I've put into them, nothing more. Okay, with that said, here goes:

NES:

1) Dragon Warrior
2) The Legend of Zelda
3) Dragon Power
4) Super Mario Bros. 2
5) Final Fantasy

Super NES:

1) Final Fantasy III
2) Chrono Trigger
3) Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
4) Secret of Mana
5) Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Nintendo 64:

1) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2) Mischief Makers
3) Banjo-Kazooie
4) Diddy Kong Racing
5) Jet Force Gemini

Game Cube:

1) Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
2) Beyond Good and Evil
3) Tales of Symphonia
4) Chibi Robo!
5) The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Wii:

1) Okami
2) The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
3) Muramasa: The Demon Blade
4) Lost in Shadow
5) Ivy the Kiwi?

Probably something like:

Katamari Damacy- PS2
Earthbound - SNES
The Tropico series- PC
Team Fortress 2- PC
The Medal of Honor series

No particular order, and I don't play video games much anymore, but those have been my favorites in the past.

I used to play a lot of strategy and war games.

Europa Universalis and Take Command were my respective favorites.

I think you might like Sid Meier's Civilization series. I can't say I've played it yet (though I plan to), but they actually use it in some current History courses and many people I know with History majors are big fans.

His name is familiar to me. He did a Gettysburg or Civil War game too. A very popular one as I recall.

And a classic pirate game. Sadly, that theme has not been touched much since.

Thanks, Polly. Now I feel like buying a game.

There was a cool WW1 game that i was eyeing for a while. Never bought because I just didn't play games on the PC much anymore. WW1 is one of my favorite periods and it a neglected topic for war gamers.

I can't think of any good pirate games I've played. I know Tropico has a pirate expansion pack, which could be a fun pirate/fantasy state building game.

Tropico looks fun. I played the demo a while back. A long while now that I think about it. Anyway, I can't think of many pirate games at all. Sid Meier's is the only one I remember but it was sol old by the time I started playing PC games that I didn't bother with it.

Tropico is fun, and it's gotten much better at politics. It's still unrealistic, I don't see how you could have it be realistic and still be fun, but now you have a little bit more decision making tools, things like monetary policy, UN involvement, and historical context.

I just wish the game would stop treating the USSR as a player in int'l relations after 1989. That was my one wish for Tropico 4.

I know what you mean. I like when they weave real historical events into the game and make it as accurate as possible. Victoria did a great job of that but it had far too many bugs. It was just unplayable at some points.

Just looked it up. Reminds me a little of Civilization, or at least given what I know about Civ, never having played it.

If you like shooters, Medal of Honor is fairly faithful to historical context, at laast in ones I played, which were about World Wars I and II.

Civ III Conquests
the mech warrior series (although they don't work on my Windows 7)
The Rome Total War series

What I especially liked was the ideological component. You and to deal with socialism, communism, conservatives etc. The farmers in an area might be conservative or reactionary but the urban laborers and clerks were radicals. It was cool.

I'm a fan of old-school role-playing games, mostly written and created by independent developers and marketed in a simple 2D format like RPG Maker. The focus is on the story and the role-playing elements, NOT the graphics. I actually beta test for several developers, a few games every year. For some of the "indies", English is not their first language, so assisting with smooth, intelligent English dialogue is always a fun challenge. Beta testing is not a paying job, it's just fun to help make each game the best game you can. Most developers will put you in the story as a non-playable character (a character with just a line or two, not important to the story) and provide you with a free copy of the completed game in thanks for helping test it. Here's a screen shot of my NPC character in a game I beta tested several years ago.

1457

My favorites in this genre are the Aveyond Series, by Amaranth Games; and anything by Eridani Games (I will be beta testing a new game for Eridani later this month, for possible release in March).

Rock Band. I'm an expert, and it never gets old kicking the shit out of Bon Jovi. "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh we're halfway there-ere, OHHHH-OH livin' on prayer....!!!!!" Yeah, I'm such a loser. Beating the 76 (or whatever - been a while since I indulged) playlist final on expert guitar was like the highlight of my year in 2009 (hyperbole). I was pretty stoned when I did it... I haven't done drugs since, but yeah. Definitely improved my performance. I guess I'm the Lance Armstrong of Rock Band.

Also, the old Command and Conquer Red Alert was like the best game ever. I'm talking Windows '95.

Guitar hero?

Don't like as much as Rock Band, but still a ridiculous amount of fun.

My friends and I used to have Guitar Hero and Rock Band parties. Alcohol and video games. Best combination ever. I remember once saying how you didn't actually have to say the words to win the vocal portion of Rock Band, and proceeded to prove it. Still embarrassing...

In Korea they have these arcade games that are boxing simulators. It is the same sort of thing as the dance ones- except you aren't dancing. I was into a dozen cheap Korean beers and beat the all time record on the machine. My buddies demanded that I do it again, and I did better. The local Koreans gave us wide berth when I stumbled out of the place.

Guitar and Rock Band are really only fun as party games for me. That being said it can be a really good time, especially with a little bit of alcohol in the mix.

Rome Total War is fun

The battles usually became too chaotic though. It wasn't realistic in that respect. That's one thing I didn't like about the Total War series.

If expecting my men to stay in a recognizable formation is too much to ask so be it. They'll get slaughtered. I could always gallop off.

I did that once in Medieval TW. It was in the Hold Land which was cool. :cool2: When battle began I was not only heavily out numbered but my troops were deployed randomly b the game engine. I gathered everyine together and made straight for the Muslim center. After a few minutes they fled. :cool2:

As you can tell from my list in the OP though, my preference is definitely for fantasy RPGs and adventure games, though I also like lots of puzzle games these days too. I don't really care much for the modern, Western MMO-RPGs. Once RPGs started going multi-player, that's when the genre started going downhill, IMO. I also generally enjoy platformers (Mario Bros., Sonic, Klonoa, etc.). Although I don't hate them all, shooting games, fighting games, and (conventional) sports games are my least favorite genres.
