For those of us who are observing lent, what will you be giving up?

Last year I gave up chocolate with my girlfriend, who is actually Catholic. This year I'd like to give up soda or some other unhealthy habit or food.

What is lent exactly?

I may get all or part of this wrong, but it is a tradition for many Christian sects to observe lent between Ash Wednesday (technically yesterday in my time zone) and good Friday. Most Christians will give something up (usually something they'd rather not give up) for the entirety of lent, and are not allowed to eat any meat (except for fish) on Fridays. I think some sects do it differently, but that's how I remember it.

I'm not a Christian though I used to be Catholic, but I've always admired this tradition in particular and liked that religion gave people a chance to give up something they enjoy for a higher cause.

I bought several shopping bags (nylon canvas) from my local grocery store last week. I'm giving up the convenience of plastic and paper bags when I buy groceries and instead, lugging my own bags. It's gonna be a pain....but whatever you give up for Lent is not supposed to be easy....in remembrance of the suffering Jesus endured leading up to his crucifixion.

Sounds pretty good. Maybe instead you should consider giving up whiskey in general?

Jack w/coke is my go-to drink at parties. I can spread them out throughout the night and it tastes pretty great. Maybe I need to give up whiskey for lent!
