Not until I've watched clips of owls interacting with other birds of prey did I begin to develop a bit of a distaste for them. They are so silent that sometimes other birds don't realize they have flown up and are sitting on the branch next to them, the owl's prey, waiting for a chance to kill. Owls are very interesting but sort of creepy, and I can understand better now how they have developed in myths and legends.

We have a couple of Great Horned Owls in the neighborhood. I've never actually seen them kill anything, but I'm sure they do keep the pigeon population around here down. The wife saw two disembodied wings lying in the street today.

Living in the country, I often hear the hoot of an owl at night, and I love the sound, but I know they can be deadly to other birds and small critters.

My sister and I were once way out in the boonies and we couldn't pinpoint the source of a loud "thumping," so we walked over a ridge and found an old abandoned home site -- just rubble -- and looked down an old well. I had a weird feeling and looked up and there on an old beam above the well was a white owl -- almost directly above us -- looking down at us. It stayed for probably 10 seconds or so and then finally lifted off. Was strange because it was daytime -- and because the owl was white.

I think it's their silent, stealthy surprise attacks always under cover of darkness that has given them their sinister reputation and association with evil.

Owls creep me out. My grandma used to talk about an owl. I saw it once and asked "who" are you"? It said " who" I asked " who" this went on forever. I finally gave up.

Owls are beautiful birds and they are no more or less predatory than other birds of prey, they just work the night shift when many rodents are active.

One time my friend Radio God rescued an owl. It was during a powerful wind storm, the bird was injured and couldn't fly. He couldn't pick the bird up for obvious reasons. The talons and beak were no joke. The neighbor had a dog and that dog was scaring and pestering the owl. Radio went and sat by that owl, and protected that owl through the storm.

After the storm he made sure the owl was in a safe place up on a fence. The owl left on his own. But something amazing happened. The owl remembered him and came back. Radio was outside smoking and he seen a dark shadow sweep over him. It was the owl. The owl landed on a fence near Radio God. Radio called me out to come see the owl. The owl let us get right next to him. He was magnificent. I must admit, I was slightly afraid. Radio told me not to be afraid. It was strange standing face to face a few inches away from him, those eyes were piercing, and so beautiful. The owl was so huge. He could have been about 3 ft tall, and his wingspan was as wide as your arms outstretched.

That owl had come back to say thank you. For a while after Radio would often see that dark shadow go over him while he was out smoking. The owl was just stopping by.

Pretty cool story. Animals are so much more intelligent than what we give them credit for. When I was looking in his eyes, I was wondering what he was thinking, he seemed so intelligent. He had pure laser like awareness and presence, amazing.

There is a language beyond words that seems to be universal. I think they can understand us because they understand the meaning behind the words. Although many domesticated animals most certainly do understand your actual language. LoL. I have a bird who definitely understands, and hell he even speaks the language, LoL.

I've reviewed the thread trying to find where I or anyone else said that owls are more (or less) predatory than other birds of prey, but I don't seem able to find it. Might you point it out? Thanks.

Also, you are correct that owls are almost exclusively active at night, as expounded in the main theme of the thread. Your confirmation is appreciated, of course.

I agree that owls are interesting, doh.

About ten years ago, before I knew very much about pit bulls (or dogs generally), I was getting into my car one afternoon outside my office and a large, all white pit bull came and sat down on the curb right next to my car and looked at me. It looked like she had either flea bites or places all over where she had been hit - kids throwing rocks? - and it was a very hot July day in Phoenix. I looked in her eyes and she looked into mine and it was a moment of perfect inter-species communication: she said, "You're a human - tell me what to do". She was obviously exhausted, no doubt thirsty and hungry, and she followed me back to my building where some ladies I worked with brought her some food and water. A woman and her child were passing by and offered to adopt the dog, and led her away on an improvised leash made of string. I think about her sometimes and hope she found a good home.

I’m from Washington state where the spotted owl was a big issue for a while. It was said that a spotted owl could only survive in old growth forests. That kind of fell apart when a spotted owls nest was discovered in a broken K Mart sign in Tacoma.

I saw a great bumper sticker then. It said, “Save a tree. Wipe your ass with a spotted owl”.

Remember back in the day when alligators were an endangered species? Now they have been discovered 400 miles north in NE Arkansas/TN. Even worse is a lot of them are extra crazy from meth lab runoff in the waterways.

Two nights later ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeCxuKF9Ki0

Eagle cam captures great horned owl attack on nesting pair of bald eagles in SW Florida. An aerial battle ensues, recorded by cam on the ground.

That's four recorded owl attacks -- three by great horned owls and one by a spotted owl -- against creatures much larger than they are -- including people! -- and that outnumber them. The attacks were both in the darkness of night and in broad daylight (see clips already posted). In this case above, there are no eaglets in the nest, so the owl was either attacking for a meal out of an eagle or (more likely) trying to drive the pair away simply so it could get in and study the contents of the nest. Amazing.

These clips evidence that GHOs are very aggressive. They could cause serious damage if they ever grabbed hold of you with their razor-sharp talons, and if it happened at night, that would make for a horrifyingly creepy experience that might well send you to the ER. Yet for reasons unknown, their reputations don't reflect a belligerence that extends even against humans.

I had know idea how bold owls are! Can't think of another predator of that size that is anywhere near as aggressive. If they think they can get away with it, they'll do it whether humans are present or not! So remember to keep your kitty or puppy-dog on a leash beside you in an area known for owl attacks because, like the man in the video says, "there's a little more reluctance by the owl to actually confront humans." A little more.

A little more reluctance could well translate into a critical second or two and the difference between going home from the park with the tail wagger you came with or scraping up a pile of hamburger into a burial box. :)

This summer I was out in the woods sitting in a patch of sunshine. I had my little bird with me in his cage. Suddenly out of nowhere a huge white owl just flies out of the bushes in front of me, he flew right past me. He surprised the heck out of me. I was really not expecting that. But after that I took my bird back in the house. I wasn't trying to bait the owl, with my bird, Lol. My poor bird was scared.

Was Kathleen Peterson killed by an owl?

How exactly could an owl be responsible for the death of Kathleen Peterson? The Owl Theory essentially posits that a Barred Owl attacked Peterson, got entangled in her hair, and inflicted serious injuries, including the removal of part of her scalp, which triggered a series of events that led to her death after falling down a flight of stairs. The theory first came to light in late 2009, after attorney Larry Pollard, a friend and neighbor of Peterson’s, took a fresh look at the evidence. Her autopsy revealed seven lacerations, including very deep ones in the back of her scalp, and pine needles stuck to one of her hands, which both held clumps of her own hair. As Pollard discovered, the strands in the victim’s left hand contained three small feathers. Also, as Pollard and several ornithological experts noted, the pattern and shape of the cuts on Kathleen Peterson’s head suggest a weapon quite unlike a fireplace tool. If the culprit was an intruder, the finger points to the Barred Owl, a common species in and around Durham. https://www.audubon.org/news/was-owl-real-culprit-peterson-murder-mystery
