Alright...so best cover songs. They can be done by whomever but cover songs are always better when the band doing them puts their flavor into it:

Here are a few:

One of my favorites. Cake does a lot of great covers, they put in all of their dry humor and funk.

That reminded me of a cover Jason Mraz did of Bob Dylan. Not a huge Mraz fan but he did a good job with this one.

First time I heard this I was blown away. One of my favorite bands at the time was doing a cover of my favorite country singer.

Ohh that reminds me of another one.

Sam Roberts covering Gordon Lightfoot:

Swans covered I Wanna Be Your Dog (Iggy Pop and the Stooges) and made it creepy as fuck. It really deserved this treatment. It's a creepy song, lyrically, and I never thought the original did the lyrics justice.

Not bad actually. I've never liked the stuff I've heard by Jason Mraz but he does the song justice.

I love it when bands do that. Gary Jules did kinda the same thing with Mad World, he just brought out the real emotion of the lyric.

O God that song. I never heard that until I saw Donnie Darko. I listened to this nonstop for a while. Depressing couple of days, really.

Have you ever heard the original? It's completely different:

I can't say I have until now. It's a completely different feeling, not that it's not good, but I agree the Jules captured the lyrics better.

Here's an example of the opposite, though I've posted it before on the forums.I love Xiu Xiu, but what he's done here is take a pop song with very little substance and given it a whole new vibe, which makes it really interesting, but still kinda creepy.

After I saw the picture I knew it was gonna be creepy going into it.

Great one. 40 Oz. To Freedom is the only Sublime album I think is 100% solid, their best work. I will always probably like Waiting For My Ruca best, just for the perfect minimalist beat and all those samplings. It's addictive, when you are using good speakers/headphones.

OK, ya'll knew I was gonna post 60s, right? Baby, It's You was written by Burt Bacharach and first recorded by the Shirelles in 1961. The Beatles covered the song shortly thereafter:

Then it was covered by Smith in 1969. Great song!

No doubt covering The Beatles. Cool thing about this one, they have a bunch of sweet bands on stage with them. Slipknot, The Vandals, Goldfinger.
