Many of the old ads below helped entice me to become a lifelong smoker.......as did many in my generation. However, I'm proud to say that I have been quit of the nasty things for over 7 years. Everybody was hawking cigarettes on TV commercials back in the day....Steve McQueen, Lucy and Desi, Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies, even the Flintstones. I do not approve of the below messages....but some of them were fun to watch!

When I was a kid cigarette commercials were set on islands with lots of pretty girls around, they all insinuated you were cool if you smoked. Ciggy commercials were no different than anything else. They are all designed to suck you in to give them your money. Same with all the informericals of today.

Chesterfields - that was basically unfiltered shredded tires, right?

They still have them. I remember seeing them somewhere and being a little surprised that they weren't burned in a huge pile somewhere.

When the military started the crusade against smoking in the 80s, military personnel started giving bubble gum cigars out to celebrate their promotions instead of tobacco cigars.......and you can still get these (they also come in a box of pink or blue for new baby celebrations....)

Most retro candy shops have them. The Cosmopolitan in vagas has an old cigarette vending machine that has them..... very amusing to see.

This public service announcement from back in the day remains the most persuasive commercial about cigarettes I've seen so far:

...Oh no wait, you were looking for good commercials FOR cigarettes, my bad. Never seen a good way of marketing the number one leading cause of cancer and death in America.

I think the most insidious brainwashing cig commercial of all was the marlboro man. All kids wanted to be cowboys then not gangstas and he was a cool mofo.
