View Full Version : Do You Make Music?

Making music with my friends has always been a favorite pastime of mine. Normally we just jam, usually in our drummer's basement, but this our first serious effort at making writing/recording/mixing an album. Everything is done using our own equipment, just our instruments, a preamp, a laptop and a microphone.

I'm particularly proud of this song:

Does anyone else have anything they've recorded? I wouldn't doubt if we have some talented musicians around here.

You're so talented, KC! I'm envious. I can't play anything, I can't sing (couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, my own mother said I sounded like a screeching cat....I could clear a room easily by belting out a few non-notes). I just don't have a musical bone in my body (though I adore music).

I can't sing either, Ocean. Neither can our vocalist, but he does all our stuff as spoken word and we hope the lyrics speak for themselves.

Thanks! And I'm sure you're not that bad. When I went to a Baptist church, I couldn't sing and didn't want to contribute to the already tone deaf congregation, so I did my part by playing bass and occasionally acoustic guitar on some of our gospel hymns.

I have some drums I abuse from time to time. I don't think the gf would call it "making music".

I've fiddled around with guitar, and even have a ukulele, but I'm tone deaf.

LOL, even I have to admit that I'm REALLY that bad! By contrast, Mr. Ocean owns several acoustic guitars (most of them Taylor; a standard 6 string, one made of Kona wood, a 12 string and at least one more). The Kona wood guitar is the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen, and has a full, sweet sound. Looks like this:
2952
He bought 3 of his Taylor guitars with part of his inheritance from his mother; Taylors are VERY expensive. He can play very well (loves fingerpicking style) AND he can sing. Some people just get it all, ya know? He's never been even remotely interested in the entertainment field though; too shy. But he's always a big hit at family gatherings, especially at Christmas.

Mine would probably say the same about some of my "creative" guitar playing. I have fun though

That is a gorgeous guitar. And playing at family get togethers is about the extent that I would want to be too. The few times I have done performances, I prefer to just hang back in the back ground (which is why bass is perfect for me to play performance wise).

I have done lead guitar playing live. It was fun, gave me kind of a rush, but if was ever in a band that played live I wouldn't want to fill that niche.

Thats all that matters, isn't it?

Is this the ukulele player who was featured on PBS?...

Prisoner furloughed to play gig in US
Thu, Aug 11, 2016 - A ukulele player from Maui who unwittingly sang a duet with reggae artist Matisyahu is to perform with the singer in Hollywood.

However, making the opportunity happen required help from Maui’s top prosecutor and public defenders. A judge is allowing Clint Alama to fly to Los Angeles and back while temporarily released from jail, where he is being held on a probation violation after convictions for assault and other charges. Matisyahu and his bassist, Stu Brooks, were at a Maui coffee shop recently when they heard Alama strumming the singer’s hit One Day. Matisyahu sang along, while Alama seemed oblivious to his singing partner’s identity. Brooks filmed the impromptu duet.

The musicians later invited Alama to perform the song at their concert tomorrow at the Hollywood Palladium. There was one problem, Alama revealed: A warrant was out for his arrest because of the probation violation. Brooks posted that conversation on Facebook. Maui County Prosecuting Attorney John Kim saw the video and looked into Alama’s case. Kim said he had watched the earlier coffee shop video while on vacation in Atlanta, and enjoyed seeing a local guy get some positive attention. So Kim then got in touch with Alama’s public defenders and probation officials to come up with an arrangement. Meanwhile, Alama turned himself in earlier this week, was arrested and remains jailed at Maui Community Correctional Center.

A judge agreed to temporarily release Alama, allowing him to take a red-eye flight to Los Angeles today, perform One Day at the Hollywood Palladium tomorrow and then return to Maui, Kim said. Brooks said he and Matisyahu do not know the details that led to Alama’s convictions, but are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. “It seems like everyone is supporting him,” Brooks said. “He seems to have a lot of fans [in Hawaii].” The musicians are handling Alama’s travel arrangements, including having him picked up from the airport. “He’s been given an opportunity to showcase his talent. We decided far be it from us to hold him back,” Kim said. “That’s the true meaning of aloha — to give these guys a second chance, to understand their circumstances. Now it’s on him.”

Never ever apologize for your song. That is a fine song with a quality mix. The lyrics work and with some tweaking you could get away with the vocal track right now.

But what you need to do is find a singer to finish your song. It is very close. Any good singer could knock it out of the park.

Maybe one of those three guitar parts could be power. Just a thought. Listen to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PItMuGp39Q

No one is saying you should sound like Brian May. But notice how clesn and punchy those parts are. Your parts are fine. Pick one and feed it steroids like my example.

Mix it into the groove. Watch what happens.

But the guitar player wrote this song. You know it and I know it so he should step up snd take ownership.
