I think Petraeus could have beaten Obama. It's not as if this has been a strong crop of GOP contenders. Most of them have either put their feet in their mouths or put their naughty bits into someone else's naughty bits.

Mister D

True.....think Powell can compare to Petraeus? Evidently Obama was quite worried. Think Petraeus would have made a Stronger candidate for he GOP? He would be great on Foreign Policy but I don't know about domestic issues. Which he would have had to ride the popularity wave.

Most of these schmucks are unprincipled so his lack of depth on domestic issues can be made up for. Could have been I should say...Hey, no reason he had to run as a Republican. A primary challenge would have been even more frightening for BO.

Eisenhower was far superior to Petraeus.

In what capacity? Ike was a great manager and politician which served him well on the Western Front. I'll give him that.

He was. Plantagenet!

Although speaking only langue d'oïl (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Langue_d'oïl) and langue d'oc (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Langue_d'oc)[4] (http://thepoliticalforums.com/#cite_note-3) and spending very little time in England (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Kingdom_of_England) (he lived in his Duchy of Aquitaine (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Duchy_of_Aquitaine) in the southwest of France, preferring to use his kingdom as a source of revenue to support his armies),[5] (http://thepoliticalforums.com/#cite_note-4) he was seen as a pious hero by his subjects.[6] (http://thepoliticalforums.com/#cite_note-5) He remains one of the very few Kings of England remembered by his epithet (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Epithet), rather than regnal number (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Regnal_number), and is an enduring, iconic (http://thepoliticalforums.com/wiki/Icon) figure in England and France.....snip~

Plantagenent! That's right. I knew he had lands in France. All of the English monarchs did at that time.

someone compared Petraeus to Ike, one thing about Ike, he served from 52 to 60 the thing is Ike ended the Korean war and served 2 terms as president, as far as I know he is the only president this century to serve 2 full terms in peace time. regardless of the cold war era, at least we had 8 years of relative peace and not spending billions on military engagements. the campaign sloga " I like Ike is true

I admire Ike. I just don't think he was a great commander. He was a great manager. he knew how to work with people and that skill came in very handy on the Western Front.

I don't speak for MoveOn but I will say the choice of wording was poor. The ensuing firestorm made no sense other than providing another opportunity to attack the Left.

Counter-insurgency is a whole different ball game. It's not war or at least it's not not war as we conceive it. We didn't prepare for this. War and nation building are two very different things. As for Qurans, the media should have done the sensible thing and simply buried the story. No fuss, no muss.

Definitely agree, especially since he seems so universally well liked.

Maybe in political circles.

Don't ask my son what he thinks of Petraeus, though. You might not like the answer. My son was in Iraq with the 101st Airborne. He has never really explained why he dislikes the General so much, but I remember he loved the name MoveOn gave him. He hinted that he was not the only soldier who felt that way.

I can say that my son's biggest problem with his experience of having been sent to Iraq 3 times was all of the lying and political garbage they were forced to endure and keep quiet about. Like what all took place the night the Muslim soldier threw a grenade into the Officer's tent in Camp Pennsylvania. Or the story of Pvt. Lynch. Or of the unlocked ammo dump outside of Baghdad that was left unattended for 2 days and WHY.

I'll say that we've heard 2 different versions of the Jessica Lynch rescue story and seems to be very accurate. Her story of how she was captured was a source of anger for a lot of the grunts, too.

As far as another story goes, it's a real shame to lie to the family of a fallen soldier so that they won't want to view the remains. We wouldn't want questions that might force Washington to admit something they want to hide from the rest of the world.

I really can't get too specific. Not very many people witnessed certain things and you never know who may watching.

Yes, I meant in terms of running for President. I don't doubt there are plenty of men in the military who don't like him. You don't get to the top without stepping on some toes, unfortunate as it is. A lot of people dislike his ambition, arrogance, and the 'cult of personality' which he surrounds himself with. I think you will find those same criticisms for any popular leader.

CIA Director Petraeus quits: extramarital affair
November 9, 2012 WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials say revelations about the affair that led to Friday's resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus were discovered in the course of an FBI investigation.

The officials, briefed on what led to the CIA director's sudden resignation, spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter.

It was unclear what the FBI was investigating or when it discovered the Petraeus affair.

CIA director David Petraeus resigns over affair
9 November 2012 - David Petraeus retired from 37 years in the military to become CIA director

CIA director David Petraeus has resigned from his post, admitting he had an extra-marital affair. In a statement, Mr Petraeus said he had submitted his resignation to President Barack Obama, and that he had shown "extremely poor judgement". He described his behaviour as "unacceptable" for the leader of the nation's main intelligence agency. Mr Petraeus became CIA boss in 2011 after heading international forces in Iraq, then in Afghanistan. He was the highest-profile military officer of the post-9/11 years, winning plaudits for his role running the "surge" in Iraq and implementing a counter-insurgency strategy in Afghanistan.

'Great patriot'

Mr Petraeus' resignation came just three days after President Barack Obama's re-election, and prompted a flurry of statements from the White House, intelligence community and Mr Petraeus himself. Announcing his decision to stand down, the former general was full of contrition. "After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extra-marital affair," Mr Petraeus said in a statement. "Such behaviour is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organisation such as ours. This afternoon, the president graciously accepted my resignation."

Mr Obama's statement said Mr Petraeus had "provided extraordinary service to the United States for decades", citing both his time as CIA director and service to the military. "By any measure, through his lifetime of service David Petraeus has made our country safer and stronger." "Going forward, my thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work." James Clapper, director of national intelligence, thanked Mr Petraeus for his decades of service: "Dave's decision to step down represents the loss of one of our nation's most respected public servants," "I have spent more than five decades serving our country - in uniform and out - and of all the exceptional men and women I have worked with over the years, I can honestly say that Dave Petraeus stands out as one of our nation's great patriots."

CIA deputy director Michael Morell will serve as acting director of the agency, the White House confirmed. Eventually Mr Obama must nominate a new director to head the agency, who will then need to be confirmed by the Senate. Mr Morell, who is well respected at both the White House and on Capitol Hill, also served as acting director following the departure of former CIA chief Leon Panetta. The CIA faces a potential period of instability after Mr Petraeus' resignation, as it also deals with a budget plateau and questions over its response to a deadly attack at a US consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
