At least 72 people have been killed in bomb attacks targeting Shia Muslims in southern Iraq and the capital Baghdad.

Officials said 45 pilgrims died in a suicide attack in Nasiriya and 27 people died in Shia areas of Baghdad.

The attacks were the deadliest since the last US soldiers pulled out of Iraq on 18 December.

Sectarian tensions have risen since the US pullout and since an arrest warrant was issued for Sunni Vice-President Tariq al-Hashemi.

The BBC's Rafid Jabboori in Baghdad says Iraq is going through a severe political crisis and the situation in the country is tense.

Regional health chief Hadi Badr al-Riyahi said hospitals in Nasiriya had received 45 killed and 68 wounded.

The civil war is about to begin. Now that Saddam is gone there is no dictator to hold this splintered country together, and no check on Iran either. Seems like the next ten years in the Middle East might end up being bloodier than the last ten.

Nice acronym.

Not our problem but it will affect a lot here in the States because of oil prices. In the short term it's going to be bad for our economy but long term it will be another step in the right direction moving away from the Middle East. I guess it's time to take our medicine, the sooner the better.

We deserve it. We have a way out of the oil monopoly and we don't take it.

It will take time. It certainly won't happen overnight.

Many of them probably are heavily invested in oil-dependent businesses.

And in the ideology that makes this crap seem worthwhile.

Good point. The two of them together is probably a substantial bloc of those that manage our foreign policy.

Sure seems that way. That's why I think it was a good point made earlier (by who I don't remember) thaqt a new POTUS can only do so much. There is a structure in place and a way of thinking about the world that has to be rooted out.

The Sunni didnt hesitate to start using those bombs.....huh? Here in this Country the Sunni are the Minority. yet they will still stir shit up. In Syria they are the majority. There they come right out and declare themselves as activists and rebels. They want Regime Change.

Here in Iraq it's reverts back to those sectarian divisions. I bet the original Babylonians that are still round wish these two factions of Arabs would just kill each other off so they could come back to power. Shame it will not happen.
