TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Two assailants on a motorcycle attached a magnetic bomb to the car of an Iranian university professor working at a key nuclear facility, killing him and another person Wednesday, state TV reported. The slayings suggest a widening covert effort to set back Iran's atomic program.
The attack in Tehran bore a strong resemblance to earlier killings of scientists working on the Iranian nuclear program. It is certain to amplify authorities' claims of clandestine operations by Western powers and their allies to halt Iran's nuclear advances.

The blast killed Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a chemistry expert and a director of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran, state TV reported. State news agency IRNA said Roshan had "organizational links" to Iran's nuclear agency, which suggests a direct role in key aspects of the program.

Tehran has accused Israel's Mossad, the CIA and Britain's spy agency of engaging in an underground "terrorism" campaign against nuclear-related targets, including at least three slayings since early 2010 and the release of a malicious computer virus known at Stuxnet in 2010 that temporarily disrupted controls of some centrifuges — a key component in nuclear fuel production. All three countries have denied the Iranian accusations.

Defiant Iranian authorities pointed the finger at archfoe Israel.....snip~

I see Israel has been taking their shots. Who else is would be able to move around freely inside Iran and get close to a Nuke Scientist? This will ratchet things up some more. Israel has already said. 2012 will be a year to remember for Iran. Also I think that one Brit analyst has it right. That if the rheotoric doesn't scale back. This is going to lead to confrontation.

On another note.....Shell Oil is finally closing operations down in Iran all due to the sanctions that were just imposed by Obama. Uhm one qestion tho.....WHY IS SHELL OIL DOING BUISNESS WITH IRAN, STILL!!!!!

Wow, huge news!

So it looks like Israel is taking matters into its own hands, interesting. I guess they could be getting CIA help too but I'm not sure they would need it.

Shell is doing business with Iran because they're multinational and can get away with it.

What is sad about that? I would rather see a bunch of nuclear scientists trying to make nuclear weapons for Iran be killed than for a massive air war or ground invasion against Iran which would killed a heck of a lot more people.

I wouldn't advocate a conventional war against Iran, but I would certainly advocate a shadow war against them. It is a dangerous world out there. The guy should have been more careful. And Iran should stop seeking nuclear weapons.

This Iranian regime is not going to get a nuke. That is not going to happen. They're religious nuts and everyone knows it. When martyrdom is one of your religious tenets, you cannot have a sound mind and appease them at the same time.

This does not mean military action — nor does it mean invasion, conquest, or occupation. Regime change, in the case of Iran, means open support for a “Persian Spring (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iran/8608095/Why-we-should-back-the-Persian-Spring.html).” It means replicating the Reagan-Thatcher model vis-à-vis Lech Walesa in Poland andthe late Vaclav Havel (http://articles.cnn.com/2011-12-18/world/world_europe_czech-republic-vaclav-havel-obit_1_vaclav-havel-czech-president-velvet-revolution?_s=PM:EUROPE) in Czechoslovakia: supporting Iranian dissident and opposition groups rhetorically, politically, financially, materially, and morally until a popular uprising — simmering in Iran since the Green Movement in 2009 — brings down the few hundred or so theocratic mullahs threatening the world.

I agree

It is a good thing. Once the oil dries up and we leave there will be nothing there but tribes of barbarians slaughtering each other.

In the meantime though we're firmly sucking on their oil producing teet so short term we need some stability. If the shit really hits the fan then at least it will be another push toward alternative fuels.

http://news.yahoo.com/covert-war-iran-heats-execution-nuclear-scientist-204000554.html

One of the most endangered people to be is an Iranian nuclear scientist. This was illustrated recently when two men on a motorcycle drove up next to a car being driven by Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan and placed a magnetic object on it.
Roshan was a chemistry expert and a director of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran. He is the latest Iranian nuclear scientist to be assassinated in what appears to be a series of hits undertaken by persons unknown. The CIA and the Israeli Mossad have denied knowledge of the executions.

There is clearly a covert effort to delay the development of an Iranian nuclear weapon. Several other Iranian nuclear scientists have been liquidated in a similar manner as Roshan. A computer virus called Stuxnet was introduced, according to the New York Times (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/SIG=13g1emrlg/EXP=1327535998/**http%3A//www.nytimes.com/2010/11/19/world/middleeast/19stuxnet.html%3F_r=2%26pagewanted=1%26hp), to wreck centrifuges at the Iranian nuclear facility at Bushehr.

Someone is killing the nuclear scientists of Iran. The Mossad and the CIA have the means to do so, though understandably Israel has the most immediate motive. But the covert war being waged by someone in Iran constitutes a delaying tactic. Inevitably, sterner measures would have to be undertaken, involving bombers and cruise missiles. That will take place sooner or later unless regime change happens in Iran.

The problem is that a ruling elite that believes they are following the will of God is not likely to be responsive to popular will. Iran has proven quite adroit and brutal in crushing popular uprisings. That suggests that someone is going to have to start aiding Iranian dissidents in a big way, including with arms as necessary. That would ratchet the covert war to a new level.....snip~
