Syria's President Bashar al-Assad has granted a general amnesty for all crimes committed during the 10-month uprising, state-run media report.

It would apply to army deserters who turned themselves in before the end of January, peaceful protesters and those who handed in unlicensed weapons, Sana state news agency is quoted as saying.

The UN says more than 14,000 people are in detention.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged Mr Assad to end the violence.

"Stop the violence. Stop killing your people. The path of repression is a dead end," Mr Ban said in a speech at a conference on Arab world democracy in Beirut.

President Assad has issued several prisoner amnesties since the start of the uprising in March, but thousands of people are believed to remain in prison.

So he's offered amnesty before but everyone is still locked up. Now he is offering amnesty if people turn themselves in. If I'm one of them no way am I going to trust this guy. Show up for amnesty and get locked up with the rest of them. The UN is saying 5,000 civilians killed, 400 since the Arab League started monitoring. With all the attention on Iran now this could fester for a while.

Qatar's Amir Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.....

AMMAN (Reuters) - Qatar has proposed sending Arab troops to halt the bloodshed in Syria, where violence has raged on despite the presence of Arab League monitors sent to check if an Arab peace plan is working.

The emir, whose country backed last year's NATO campaign that helped Libyan rebels topple Muammar Gaddafi, is the first Arab leader to propose Arab military intervention in Syria where protesters are demanding President Bashar al-Assad stand down.

CBS said on its website that the interview would be broadcast in its "60 Minutes" program Sunday.....snip~

Oh, lookie what we have here. Qatar calling for Arab Troops to go into Syria. The Same pukes that set up that bank for the Libyan rebels. The same Sunni that have been working with the French in calling for all this military action with the Arab Spring. Do you think he is calling other Shia Arabs to go into Syria armed?

First the French with their idea of a safety zone and now Qatar thinks it may take Arab troops on the ground. Russia has spoken. They don't give a shit what the Sunni Arabs think. They are not going to allow any intervention in Syria. So they say!

Russia also has come to the defense of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, warning Western nations not to intervene in Syria with military forces. Russia is a major arms supplier to Syria (http://thepoliticalforums.com/News/News.aspx/151736#.TxKpGW_kBGB) and has a heavy investment in Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Russia Surprises West With Harder Syria StanceRussia submitted a UN security council draft criticizing the regime of Bashar al-Assad, but stopped short of calling for sanctions.
Russia surprised Western diplomats on Thursday when it put forth a draft resolution in the United Nations Security Council taking a harder line on violence in Syria.

Western nations rejected two previous Russian drafts they said unacceptably attempted to assign blame equally to the government and the opposition.....snip~

Well after the rhetoric that the Russians have thrown out there I doubt that the West will accept this draft resolution either. I am surprised the Russkies havent used Intel sources to take out some of these Sunni Opposition Leaders.
