DAMASCUS, Syria — Saying that “half the universe” was conspiring against his country, the Syrian foreign minister forcefully rejected a regional attempt to broker an end to the 10-month conflict here on Tuesday and suggested that there would be no end to the government’s use of force to put down the uprising.

Speaking to reporters in Damascus, the foreign minister, Walid al-Moallem, said armed groups had stepped up attacks on the security services and civilians, and promised that the government would deal with the groups “firmly.”

Activists reported a sharp escalation of violence in the last two days, saying at least 17 people were killed in one neighborhood alone in troubled Homs, the city that has become a focal point for concerns about Syria’s slide into civil war.

The Local Coordination Committees, an opposition group, said that across the country, at least 68 people had been killed.

As long as things in Iran continue to escalate I don't think Assad is going to feel any pressure to step down. Who's going to make him?

Homs. Another ancient city.

I wouldn't step down either. For what? Go to trial or worse?

Right. Look at the track record:

- Saddam tried and killed.
- Gaddafi killed.
- Mubarak tried and will likely be killed.

Not much incentive there.

Exactly. What does he have to lose? What do we have to gain from forcing him out?

Guess the Rebels will have to fight it out on their own. Russia ain't having it with any interference in Syria. They have made that point clear.

Just why does the West want the Sunni to take this Country? The funny thing there is The MB was prevalent in bringing Mubarak Down, then Gadhafi, and now here they are knocking on Assad's door. Coming with protests and of course armed rebellion. Creating a civil war as well as continuing their religious one.

IMO the Sunni are using geopolitical means to drive the Shia under apoint where they can never rise up again against their Sunni brothers and Masters. While at the same time playing the rest of the world as they set their Democratic Caliphate, while the World remains dependant on them. All the while soaking up our Military Tech and the Russian's tech too.
