Fold-up car of the future unveiled for Europe.....

A tiny revolutionary fold-up car designed in Spain's Basque country as the answer to urban stress and pollution was unveiled Tuesday before hitting European cities in 2013.

The "Hiriko," the Basque word for "urban," is an electric (http://autos.yahoo.com/green-center/) two-seater with no doors whose motor is located in the wheels and which folds up like a child's collapsible buggy, or stroller, for easy parking.

"European ideas usually are developed in the United States. This time an American idea is being made in Europe," consortium spokesman Gorka Espiau told AFP.

Its makers are in talks with a number of European cities to assemble the tiny cars that can run 120 kilometers (75 miles) without a recharge and whose speed is electronically set to respect city limits.

The vehicle's four wheels turn at right angles to facilitate sideways parking in tight spaces.
The backers describe the "Hiriko" project as a "European social innovation initiative offering a systematic solution to major societal challenges: urban transportation, pollution and job creation.".....snip~

Look what will be coming to a town near you. Right now targeting Europe. They are planning on selling for 12,500 Euros. I don't know whats that like close to 15k for us. The car is only 1.5 meters. They say it will get 75 miles off of one charge. But look what else. Where the car would be designed to only go as fast as the city speeding limits.

Already they can make cars that the Cops/Feds can just shut down. No more High speed chases. Throw it in with electric cars and ta-da. Less trouble, safer roads at the expense of individual rights that run against the collective whole. More control into one's life.

Although electric cars are hardly something that is new or wasn't thought of in this country. Even Ford looked into the concept.

Still for something right out of the Future. Here it is. Pretty cool, Remote Control to fold up. Throw in an Auto Starter. All Wheel Drive. A car made for single people. I figure once they make the American version it will have a TV right in the front dash, where ya can take ya calls and look at who your are talking to.

snip:

Who invented the very first EV is uncertain and several inventors have been given credit. In 1828, Hungarian, Ányos Jedlik invented a small-scale model car powered by an electric motor that he designed. Between 1832 and 1839 (the exact year is uncertain), Robert Anderson of Scotland invented a crude electric-powered carriage. In 1835, another small-scale electric car was designed by Professor Stratingh of Groningen, Holland, and built by his assistant Christopher Becker. In 1835, Thomas Davenport, a blacksmith from Brandon, Vermont (http://inventors.about.com/od/americaninventors/qt/Vermont.htm), built a small-scale electric car. Davenport was also the inventor of the first of the first American-built DC electric motor.

The thing these Green people don't get is that electricity usually comes from fossil fuels. You're not doing the world a favor by buying a car that uses a battery made from strip mined toxic metals.

More concerning to me would be getting crushed in that thing. I'd rather ride a motorcycle at least you can hit the gas and accelerate away if someone starts pulling into your space. No one will see that car until it lands as a hood ornament. Plus with electric cars you can't even hear them.

I would be more concerned about someone else being able to control the car over the owner of the car. Or for government to make sure all the cars coming down main street cant go over 30mph., or the posted speed limit.

If they weren't so afraid nuclear energy they'd have firmer ground to stand on.
