View Full Version : Why can't I give out reputation and only Thanks?

I have not been able to rep anyone in weeks. Just curious.

There's another discussion on this somewhere. Anyway, the way it works is there is a limit on the number of reps and thanks you give. Once you surpass that limit, you can't rep for a period of time, but you can continue to thank--but again, thanks count toward the rep limit.

That sucks. I've been thanking because I can't rep. Why aren't we allowed to thank who we want when we want?

Chris
10-27-2013, 11:40 AM
You can thank all you want, just not rep.

Why? You might ask one of the mod reps, adelaide or peter.

Personally I'd prefer to remove the rep system as I think it's abused. Keep thanks, add a "Groan". If I want to say more in appreciation I'll just post it or send a PM. But that's just me.

I don't have a problem with it, but @Adelaide (http://thepoliticalforums.com/member.php?u=473) is the tech-head. I defer to her.

The ONLY reason why I prefer reputation to thanks is that you get to say "why".

I like the groan addition, or maybe a wtf!! would be useful at times.

Kind of restricted to tweets. I use PMs instead.

OK, take that back, just gave a rep and was able to type a whole lot into that little textbox.

So is this proposal DOA?

What is the waiting period, BTW? I haven't been able to rep anyone for weeks it seems - is this like a 17-year locust thing?

I can't rep anyone. Some of us were on a gaming site and they allowed negative reps. I must have had 53 negative reps. It was awesome. :D

You should have been here when a former member called Cary Grant was here and we were doing negative repping - he had some really stupid negative rep score.

That guy was a real tool.

Because you give out too many thanks. They count against rep limit.

It'd be fun to have a Groan button!

I'd vote either get rid of reps or get rid of limits on it.

The bottom line is that there are limits on rep. It's affected by thanks. Why? Because we get juvenile partisan members who will sit there and thank and rep their friends endlessly to deliberately increase their Karma, which simply makes a mockery of the stat. We had negative rep which was similarly abused. I think the idea is now, if you can't rep something nice, then you can't rep anything at all, but no free for alls. So you use your thanks and rep judiciously.

I understand how that works, I just don't see a reason to limit either.

At the risk of sounding argumentative, so? Why are rules always made with abuse in mind and not towards positive outcomes. So what if jerks have great karma? Why should preventing jerks from having good karma place boundaries on people who use it the right way?

I like to give "Thanks" and I like to rep people that are awesome. My thanks aren't because I like someone. I like what they had to say. I've given thanks to people I don't like.

Like gun control laws that only law abiding citizens comply with.

I can see your point, but it's been that way since before I joined the forum. I don't know when things changed, or whether the positive rep has always been that way. Chris may know.

@Chris Thanks are included in the number of reputations given per 24 hours, which is currently set to ten. The limit is the same for all user groups, and can be changed should users desire it.

If enough members requested the change, it would happen.

I am PROUD of you but still you RECIEVE thanks at a nearly 3 to 1 ratio versus your giving of thanks

I would suggest you practice thuis much more often

Well people participate in forums differently, but that is supposed to be part of their 'fun' -- they should be given out liberally....
